2002, 2003, and 2004 Ford Mustang: The Terminator, The Mach 1 and The End (part 3)

P

Few changes were made for the 2002 Ford Mustang aside from the addition of new color options and a new steering wheel wrap for standard Mustangs. Ford did upgrade the sound system in the 2002 Mustang GT with a powerful new Visteon Mach 1000. In the US, the standard Cobra was left off the slate again due to the release of another special addition Cobra, Ford's 2003 SVT Cobra. One Hundred 2002 Mustang Cobras, all manufactured with right hand drive, were shipped to Australia and were identical to the 2001 Mustang Cobra, with the exception of a crude extra set of fog lights between the head lights and the normal fog lights. The 2002 Saleen Mustang lineup remained steady, introducing the S-281 Extreme , which was a 425 horsepower beast. The 2002 Roush Mustang remained relatively unchanged from the previous year excluding the 360R, a Roush Stage 3 with custom graphics. Of note, sales figures dropped once again, this time to around 142,000 units.

2003

The arrival of the 2003 Ford Mustang heralded big news concerning big power: the return of the famed Mustang Mach1 with a naturally aspirated DOHC 4.6L engine offering 305 horsepower (although proven to build closer to 320 bhp). The engine for the 2003 Mustang Mach 1 drew air through a functional Shaker hood scoop, which ran a black stripe to the front of the car. Similar black stripes ran along the sides of the car with the vintage Mach1 emblem. The back end was also unique, the spoiler finished in black with Bullitt style rolled exhaust tips. The Mach1 was offered only with new Magnum 500 wheels, and it came in a limited number of colors.

The other big news, along with the welcome and popular return of the Mach1, was the return of the Cobra. This mighty new 2003 Mustang Cobra, nicknamed the Terminator by enthusiasts, was fitted with a supercharged DOHC 4.6L engine building an advertised 390 horsepower. Unlike the 1999 Mustang Cobra, the Terminator Mustangs have been known to show more horsepower on a dynamometer than advertised. The Terminator engine was mated to a new 6-speed manual transmission and put to the ground in conjunction with an independent rear suspension setup.  Along with a big bad engine, the 2003 Cobra also featured a special front fascia that helped to draw more air into the engine bay, a set of rear facing vents in the hood to move heat out of the engine bay, and a redesigned rear fascia. The Cobra also received some minor appearance upgrades such as embroidered Cobra logos on the seats and SVT gauges. But for those who get to ride in, or drive a Terminator, the performance steals the show.

The 2003 Saleen Mustang lineup added a special edition SA-20 Speedster, a very rare model commemorating the company's 20th anniversary in the Mustang modification business. The 2003 Roush Mustang lineup offered a few new trim lines and the 380R was newly offered as the "premium" Roush with 379 horsepower, replacing the 360R.  The Jack Roush Classic and Boyd Coddington California Roadster were special edition trim lines offered from the Roush shop, including varied additions over the other Roush models. Steeda Performance offered a Mustang named the Q400, after their Q400-R race car.  A Q400 buyer could chose between a pair of superchargers and the Steeda special Mustang, offering an advertised 400 horsepower - dyno testing suggested it actually made about 425 horsepower. Not including the Saleen, Roush, and Steeda Mustang models, sales increased to around 155,000 units, including the 15,000+ Cobras sold as 2003 model year units.

2004

The standard 2004 Ford Mustang came with a new engine that was slightly larger, 3.9 liters, but offered no increase in performance. The standard, Mustang GT, Mach1 Mustang, and Mustang Cobra models remained relatively the same aside from a 40th Anniversary badge pinned to all but the Cobra. The mighty Terminator Mustang added the MystiChrome color package, which included exterior paint as well as interior trim highlights in the unique color shifting hue. The 2004 Roush Mustang lineup included a 40th Anniversary special edition of its own, titled the 440A - the name derived from its 400 horsepower and 40 unit production run. The 2004 Saleen Mustang lineup remained the same once again, planning for the big change: the 2005 Ford Mustang.

Sadly for some, the big news for 2005 was a fully redesigned Mustang (again), but this time it would indeed be a FULL redesign unlike what some considered a mild transformation to the New Edge Mustangs from the SN95 models, which itself required a more sever change from the previous look. However, the interest was so great around the upcoming 2005 model that many probably ignored the end of the New Edge models and sales dipped to around 142,000 units in its final year.

Remember when the "New Edge" Mustang was the "new" Mustang? That was a "new" Mustang ago as we come up on another "new" Mustang. What are your memories of the New Edge Mustang? Miss it yet? Do you think all of these new Mustangs are good or bad for the ponycar's legacy? How do you feel about the upcoming "new" Mustang?
