The new EcoBoost 3.5L V6 engine calls on a pair of turbochargers to make an amazing 355 horsepower in the Lincoln MKS and Ford Taurus SHO. If rumors prove to be true, this technologically advanced V6 could find its way into the 2011 Ford Mustang.
The Ford Mustang has offered just two basic engine options for the past
20 or so years, with either a four or six cylinder powered base model
leading the way for a more powerful V8 option in the Mustang GT (not
including SVT models). However, if rumors about the new EcoBoost
engine finding its way into the 2011 Ford Mustang, we could have
ourselves a third basic trimline from Ford. We don't know what the
EcoBoost powered Mustang would be called, although some have thrown
around the ideas of it calling on the turbocharged Mustangs of the
1980s and sporting the SVO badging...or perhaps a new Turbo GT?
The EcoBoost 3.5L V6 packs a set of small turbochargers, and thanks to the advancements in direction injection, the EcoBoost V6 makes an impressive 365 horsepower and unlike many smaller engines using forced induction for big power, the EcoBoost V6 has no lack of torque, with 350lb-ft of torque and almost no noticeable "boost lag" generated by the tiny turbos.
This is the third of the three rumored engines for the 2011 Ford Mustang, and although the Coyote 5.0L V8 is the only one not in production, the EcoBoost may prove to be the last engine that we see released, but should it be offered, it would fit perfectly between a 273-300 horsepower 3.7L V6 and the 400 horsepower 5.0L Coyote V8. Should this engine lineup come to fruition, the 2011 Mustang, including the mighty Shelby GT500, will easily be the most powerful Mustang lineup ever offered.
