Blasting Off: Launch Control in the 2012 Boss 302!
by Patrick Rall
The 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 has been billed by Ford Motor Company as the best handling factory built Mustang of all time and the limited Laguna Seca edition elaborates on the incredible additions made to the standard Mustang GT to make this one incredible road racer. However, Ford recognized the rabid enthusiasm by Mustang owners for drag racing so in addition to building the car that will stop and turn on a dime, the Motor Company equipped the 2012 Boss 302 with an adjustable launch control system that makes this one drag racing ready monster.
I was recently invited by the folks from Ford to stop by their Romeo Proving Grounds for a little seat time in the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 which included a practice session launching the Boss with the new launch control system. The Boss' launch system is controlled completely by the cruise control buttons on the left side of the steering wheel. Prior to activating the Boss launch control, you can set the desired launch RPM between 2,000 and 5,000rpm...for my testing purposes, I set the launch control in my at 4,800 in my Kona Blue Metallic (with white stripes) Boss 302. Once I selected my desired launch RPM, I rolled up to the line, putting it in first gear and pushing in the clutch, activating the launch control via the buttons on the steering wheel. Once launch control was engaged I floored the gas pedal and watch the RPMs spike and hold at 4,800...and when I let the clutch out the '12 Boss 302 exhibited just a shade of wheel spin before I was well on my way down the test track. The test track was long enough that we could bang our way through the narrow gates of 2nd and 3rd gear before slowing down only to turn around and do it again. After a few attempts, I was able to get off the line with the help of launch control at 4,800rpm while the open cutouts of the Boss-specific exhaust system allowed the 444 horsepower V8 to proclaim its greatness to everyone in attendance that day.
The 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 was designed to be one of the best handling American cars of all time with a suspension setup more advanced than any factory built Mustang ever but thanks to Ford's adjustable launch control system--this new purpose-built Mustang is the Boss of both the road course and the drag strip.
