The Mustang Source

When it comes to the Mustang, the color of Ford’s pony car has been as much a part of the vehicle’s unique history as anything else.

Take for example, today’s most popular color for the Mustang when compared to other automobile purchases. White is the best selling exterior vehicle color in the U.S. for new vehicles purchases, but the color only accounts for 10 percent of all Mustangs sold.

The top selling color for the Ford pony car right now is black, which accounts for 28 percent of all 2013 Mustangs sold.   However, between 1967 and 1973 only about 1.5 percent of the Mustangs sold were black, according to an official Ford press release.

Red, which has always been a popular color for sports cars, accounts for nearly 21 percent of all Mustangs sold compared to just over 10 percent of the total models sold in 1967.   In 1968, blue accounted for 30 percent of all Mustangs sold and popular shades like Grabber Blue and Kona Blue have driven 23 percent of the car’s overall sales in recent years.

Other earlier popular Mustang colors like green and yellow are now pretty much relegated to limited-edition models like the Bullitt and Boss 302. The last brown Mustang, which was once a popular color as well, was in 1989.

The Mustang’s color palette has also included a number of specialty colors ranging from hot Play Boy pink in 1967 to color-shifting Mystichrome on the 2004 SVT Cobra to today’s Gotta Have It Green, which in addition to a black model is still one of my personal favorites.

“Our Mustang owners are passionate about their cars, and the exterior paint color they choose invokes an emotional response to the vehicle,” said Melanie Banker, Ford Mustang marketing manager. “Mustang owners buy a vehicle in School Bus Yellow or Grabber Blue because it reflects what they want their Mustangs to say to the world about them.”

So, what’s your all-time favorite Mustang color?
