2018 Ford Mustang Convertible Revealed

Predictable and Gorgeous Mustang Convertible Debuts Shortly After Redesigned 2018 Coupe

Shortly following the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Ford showed off a refreshed 2018 Mustang Coupe with new performance and styling. The V6 is gone, and a better 2.3L EcoBoost and 5.0L V8 are on the way. Perhaps it was a foregone conclusion, but there’s also a convertible version coming, too.

For the best performance on a track, a convertible doesn’t make a lot of sense. Additionally, chopping the roof off of many cars also also means hitting the car with the ugly stick. For the Mustang convertible, however, it looks as good or better than the coupe.

If you’re looking for something unique to the convertible — aside from the power roof, of course — there isn’t much. The drop top gets the upgraded 2.3L EcoBoost with more torque, and the V8 with more power. MagneRide magnetorheological ride control dampers are optional. And there’s a new 12″ all-digital instrument cluster available.

Also, like the coupe, the standard transmission is the 6-speed manual. New for the 2018 model is the all-new 10-speed automatic transmission, a variant of which powers the 2017 Ford Raptor and the 2018 F-150. Also, interestingly, it’s a strikingly similar transmission to the one that appears in the new Camaro ZL1.

As with the coupe, pricing isn’t available yet. We wouldn’t expect too much of a price increase — if any — for the 2018 model year, though. Ford should begin construction during the normal model year changeover, later this year. Until then, there are 50 regional auto shows where the new Mustang convertible will be on display.
