92-Year-Old’s Mustang Love Runs Deep

50 years is a long commitment. But for U.S. veteran Virgil Pletcher, his love for his 289-powered 1966 Mustang makes 50 years of ownership quite easy. The 92-year-old had already owned a string of sports cars before the Mustang, but when he was told he could get a wonderful deal on a Mustang out of state, he wasted no time. The maiden voyage to bring the Mustang home had Virgil travelling from Michigan to California.

His wife — another example of a loving long-term commitment — wasn’t so fond of the car when it first arrived. She couldn’t understand why it had been ordered without air conditioning. But she turned around and found an admiration for the Mustang that would match Virgil’s.

Over the years it has seen several road-trips across the United States, and has been garaged with a few other sports cars as well. A 1984 Camaro Z28 shared garage space with the Mustang, but it was eventually traded in. Virgil’s regular car is a mini-van these days, but he still takes the Mustang out every now and then for a little fun in the California sun.
