EcoBoost Mustang Goes Boom After Beating a GT ‘Stang

The EcoBoost Mustang is a fun — and lighter — variant of Ford’s pony lineup. It’s relatively quick, and since it’s a turbocharged engine, it’s easier to get more power out of it. Ford tests these engines for durability, but that’s for a stock build. Presumably this Mustang-GT-beating EcoBoost wasn’t stock. It also ended up having a very bad day at the drag strip.

After first beating a Mustang GT, the EcoBoost ‘Stang races against a few others, including a 475-horsepower HEMI Charger. It was putting down good numbers in each of its runs, and seemed to be having a really good day at the track.

Lining up for another run, the owner lights the tires up in the burnout box to get ready. Then, the EcoBoost-powered Mustang decides that it wants to go boom, and puke out a good amount of its engine oil onto the racing surface.

It’s really hard to say what caused the failure, but I’m sure it is safe to say that the good day that owner was having turned out not to be so good afterall.

What do you think about the EcoBoost Mustang? Do you think it has the reliability to be built up and drag raced?
