Ford Focus RS Gives Mustang GT a Run for Its Money

On the surface, it seems absolutely crazy to compare a new Ford Focus RS against a 5.0-liter V8 Mustang GT. It’s probably even crazier to drag race the two. The fact is, the Mustang is designed for straight-line performance and the all-wheel drive Focus RS really… isn’t. But that hasn’t stopped two U.K. outlets from drag racing the two. It’s ultimately a split-decision, but the Mustang does get some vindication.

The first video is from the folks at Auto Express, and runs a race over a standing kilometer. The Focus absolutely destroys the Mustang off the line, and ultimately wins in the overall battle. But when both cars cross the finish line, the Mustang is going a heck of a lot faster.

Why did the Mustang lose? Traction. The course was quite slippery due to rain, presumably because it’s in the United Kingdom. The Mustang just sat and spun its wheels on launch while the Focus pulled away.

In the second video, Top Gear Magazine heads to Dunsfold and drag races the two cars over a 1/4 mile. In this race, the Mustang wins, thanks to a dry surface and just better overall grunt. Even so, the Focus RS wasn’t really that far behind, which is a testament to how much performance the little blue monster has.

What do you think? Are you surprised that the Focus RS is nearly as fast in the dry as a Mustang GT?
