In its fifty year history of the Ford Mustang the period between 1974 and 1978 isn’t exactly remembered as the heyday of performance. Even so, the Mustang II, built during that time period, represented an important part of the model’s history. For starters, the Mustang II was an enormous sales success. Nearly 400,000 were sold in 1974, more than any other year since 1967. It also represented a return to a car that was lightweight and affordable, and most likely saved the Mustang extinction during the oil shortages of the 1970s.

It’s for these reasons that Ford has paid tribute to the Mustang II in the latest episode of the Mustang Countdown video series. Ford Racing’s John Clor hosts, making the case as to why the Mustang II deserves better than the reputation that has been placed on it.
