1964 Shelby Cobra to be Preserved by Library of Congress

That Shelby nameplate, which in case you haven’t noticed we are huge fans of here at the Mustang Source, now holds a distinction shared by no other automaker on the planet.

The iconic racing brand is the only company to have a car preserved by the Library of Congress for being significant to American history.

The 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona has been honored with the high mark for being the first American built car to win an international race series, according to a MSN report.

Built in 1964 in Los Angeles, the Cobra Daytona Coupe (CSX2287) won the International Manufacturer’s GT Championship in 1965 as the first of six Daytona Coupes produced.

The ’64 Shelby race car, which now joins the ranks of iconic pieces of American history like the Statue of Liberty preserved by the Library of Congress, is equipped with a Ford 289 cubic inch V8 engine with an estimated 375 horsepower.

The Shelby’s official documentation for the Library of Congress includes a narrative and description of the vehicle; technical drawings of the car; and detailed photographs and film negatives of the vehicle for archives, according to MSN.
