2011 Mustang GT Review
Ford has revitalized the 2011 Mustang GT with a new engine, making the Mustang once again relevant in the discussion of modern day muscle cars. The new all aluminum 412 hp, 5.0L V8 engine is a much needed upgrade from the sluggish engines of recent years. In addition to the new engine, Ford has introduced larger brakes, electric powered steering and a revised suspension. Combined with last year’s exterior and interior overhaul, the 2011 Mustang GT offers a driving experience that Mustang enthusiasts can once again be proud of.
Models
The 2011 Mustang GT differs from the traditional Mustang V6 in that it comes with a larger 5.0L V8 engine. Ford offers the GT in a base model and a GT Premium. Both the GT and the Premium can be purchased as either a coupe or a convertible.
GT – The base GT model differs slightly from the V6 in several areas. The first and most noticeable area is the engine. The GT and the GT Premium feature the all new aluminum 5.0L V8 engine that boasts 412 HP and 390 foot-lbs. of torque. In addition, the GT comes with 18-inch rims, as opposed to the 17-inch rims found on the V6 model. Six speed manual or automatic transmissions are available along with several other standard features, including rear spoiler, fog lamps, CD audio system with MP3 auxiliary jack, limited slip rear differential, keyless entry, cruise control, side spotter mirrors, power driver’s seat and full power accessories. All of this retails for just under $30,000 MSRP.
GT Premium – Those wishing for a bit more should look into the GT Premium. The GT Premium is essentially the upgraded version of the V6 Premium and all of the available options for the V6 Premium are available here. These include exterior body enhancements, navigation system, upgraded audio system, power passenger seats, heated front seats, climate control, glass sun roof, xenon headlights, and upgrade suspension and braking systems. The GT Premium can also be upgraded with performance alloy wheels. The MSRP of the Mustang GT Premium is just under $33,000.
Safety
The GT has the same safety features and ratings as the V6 model, including anti-lock disc brakes, front and side seat airbags, side spotter mirrors, stability and traction control and Ford’s MyKey system (allowing parental controls for young drivers).
Fuel Economy
The GT doesn’t differ much from the V6 model, despite boasting a 5.0L V8 engine. Both the GT and the GT Premium rated at 16 MPG in the city and best-in-class 26 MPG on the highway.
Industry Reviews
Like the V6 model, most agree the Mustang GT boasts a much needed upgrade in regards to power and quickness. The overall driving experience has been a positive one and most agree that the Mustang has finally arrived in the same class as the Camaro SS and Challenger R/T. In particular, the GT is a real pleasure to drive, cranking out enough RPMs to satisfy anyone. It appears that Ford has finally completed its overhaul of the Mustang and the new engine complements last year’s aesthetic changes.
