The idea of special friendships that have developed in the world of racing certainly isn’t anything new. But the stories are often quite moving nonetheless.

One such story is that of dragster Joe Caldwell, who is determined to do what his good friend “Racin’ Jason” Betwarda didn’t get a chance to see his ’87 Mustang do: crack into the 6s at more than 200 mph.

You see, “Racin’ Jason” tragically passed before being able to see the car pull off that kind of run. But Caldwell is now aiming to complete his longtime friend’s mission, some 20 years after the car’s last race. To help in the effort, Caldwell has brought aboard the original engine builder, C&F Race Cars, and engine supplier Duttweiler Performance, as highlighted in a Hot Rod report.

Caldwell has even managed to get Racin’ Jason’s original driver to pilot the Mustang, which is now said to be cranking out about 2,200 horsepower at the crankshaft, with the help of PSI Solutions.

You can bet we’ll be keeping an eye on this one. Hopefully, somewhere up there, Racin’ Jason will be too.
