GT350 Getting Upgraded Already, Perhaps Afraid of Big Bad Camaro

GT350

According to leaked documents from the UAW and Ford Motor Company, enthusiasts have a lot to be excited about. Not only are we most likely getting a new Bronco and Ranger, but within those leaked documents, Ford outlines an even more powerful version of the 5.2-liter flat-plane crank V8 engine from the GT350 and GT350R.

In the UAW contract, as noted by AutoEvolution, the Romeo Engine Plant in Michigan will receive a $150 million upgrade over the next few years. And on the same page as the investment info, Ford and the UAW state that the 5.2-liter Voodoo V8 will be upgraded.

My first inclination as to why Ford would suddenly want to upgrade the engine comes in the form of two words: Chevy Camaro. Currently, the 6th Generation Camaro is rolling off the assembly line with some absolutely staggering performance numbers. Motor Trend recently tested the new sportscar and it came within a hair’s distance of the hardcore track special Z/28 from the previous generation. Which, if you were paying attention to the development of the GT350, was a key data point Ford was trying to beat.

The company did, but with the potential of the new Camaro yet to be unlocked, we’re sure Ford’s just thinking, “Oh crap.”

What do you all think? Is Ford quaking in its boots with fear of the next generation Z/28?
