June Sales Analysis: Mustang Finally Outsells Camaro

The Ford Mustang has trailed the Chevrolet Camaro through the first five months of 2011, but with strong sales in June 2011, Ford broke General Motors' shutout in this calendar year as they outsold the Camaro and the Dodge Challenger.  Ford has outsold the Challenger every month this year but with their success in June, Ford has their first month of bragging rights over both of their cross town rivals.

Ford sold 8,835 Mustangs in the month of June 2011, after having a fairly awful May where they sold just 6,607 pony cars.  In addition to Ford building their numbers from May to June, the Camaro saw the reverse as sales of the GM muscle car continued to slide after selling over 10,000 vehicles in April of this year.  Chevrolet moved 8,486 Camaros in the month of June, which showed growth compared to the same month last year, but it was down from the 9,451 units sold in May.

Unfortunately, the Mustang still trails the Camaro in annual sales by nearly 10,000 cars, but if Ford can continue their positive trend and GM cannot slow their downward spiral, the Mustang could close that gap as we progress through the summer of 2011.

The Dodge Challenger moved 3,384 units last month, putting it well behind the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. But with a higher price tag for comparable performance to the other two Detroit muscle cars, Dodge is generally happy with their trend of selling between 3,200 and 3,800 models per month.  The Challenger is rarely close to the other two muscle cars even though it remains steady - but still well below the Mustang.

For what it is worth, the Mustang also easily outsold the Nissan 370Z. Since the V8-less Japanese sports car is considered by some to be competition for the Mustang, it should be noted that in a month where Ford sold 8,835 Mustangs, Nissan sold 644 Z cars.  Nissan's excuse of the gap in sales would likely be something about it being a "niche car"...evidently for the niche of people who like cars that are significantly slower than those cars in its class.

As an interesting point, I was able to speak with a member of Ford's marketing team who informed me that the folks behind the Blue Oval have sold 950 examples of the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 through the month of June.  Ford plans to build a total of 4,750 new Boss 302 Mustangs (with 750 being Laguna Seca models) so with 6 months left until the 2012 calendar year, Ford has already sold 20% of the high performance Boss 302 Mustangs that sport the 2012 model year designation.
