Jim Pinkerton is the owner of the first Mercury Cougar, and he’s had the car since 1994, when he found it in a small town north of the border, sitting in what he describes as a “Quonset hut.” So how on earth did the very first in the line of Mercury muscle machines end up in Moncton, New Brunswick? Check out the video below for the whole wild story, as Jim is more than happy to tell it.

It all started when a Canadian dealership owner met up with Lee Iacocca, and told him that he wasn’t happy with his allotment of Cougars for the 1967 model year. Iacocca told someone in specialty vehicles to make the dealer happy, and deliver him one of the show cars from the Cougar launch. As such, Cougar 001 was delivered to Canada from the Chicago Auto Show stand. And that’s just the beginning of this Cougar’s story.

This is important, because the Cougar is rapidly approaching its 50th anniversary. As such, there will be a big event planned next June at the Carlisle, Pennsylvania fairgrounds to celebrate that anniversary, and Cougar 1 will be the featured attraction of the show. If you’re a Cougar fan, and want to know more about the anniversary event, you can find out more here.
