One-off 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra raises $200,000 for charity

Every year at Barrett-Jackson Ford donates a special vehicle to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and this year the one-off 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra was chosen for the honor. The car made its debut this past summer, with Ford and Shelby collaborating to build the special GT500 as a tribute to Carroll, who had just passed away a few months earlier. The car features Guardsman Blue paint with Wimbledone White stripes – an ode to the Shelby Cobra – as well as a widebody kit and an 850 horsepower supercharged V8 under the hood.

These unique one-off cars from Ford usually garner fairly large bids, especially with a charity involved, so it’s no surprise that the winning bid was an incredible $200,000. You can see a photo gallery and a video of the auction below.

Vehicle Description:

For over 50 years, Carroll Shelby inspired designers and engineers throughout Ford Motor Company. Countless engineers crossed paths with Shelby over the years, from those who crafted the original GT40, to those working on the 2013 Shelby GT500. This one-only 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 “Cobra” was built as a tribute to the late Carroll Shelby. It was unveiled by Ford Motor Company board member Edsel Ford II, Ford executive Jim Farley and Shelby American President, John Luft, at the 2012 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion where the Shelby Cobra was the featured marque of show. Starting with the 662hp Shelby GT500, a group dubbed the “Friends of Carroll” contributed to this remarkable car. They tweaked and enhanced everything on this car. More than 850hp is generated by the Ford Racing supercharged 5.8 Liter V8. That much power required 13″ wide rear wheels wrapped in massive 345-section high performance tires. All of that rubber is covered by new wide-body fenders and the entire car is finished in the same Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes that graced many 1960s Cobra roadsters. Ford teamed up Shelby American for several key components on this tribute car. Shelby American provided a specially designed hood, new rear wide-body kit, Shelby Wilwood brakes and new 20″x13″ rear and 20″x10″ front wheels. After it was introduced at Monterey, this unique Shelby toured many top enthusiast events in the United States. The “Friends of Carroll” chose to honor Carroll’s commitment to charity by auctioning the car for charity. Proceeds from the sale of the incredible vehicle will be donated to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF.
