How To Install Ford Mustang Lower Grille

One of the most distinctive features of a Ford Mustang exterior is the grille. The grille on the car is the chrome front piece that is centered in between the headlights of the vehicle. While it's not highly functional, the grille plays a crucial role in the overall appearance of your vehicle. The installation process, if you're planning on replacing the existing grille that came with your car, is quite easy and can be done from the convenience of your own home. Read on for a step by step guide on how to replace the lower grille in your Ford Mustang.

Step 1 -- Collect the Necessary Tools

You'll need to gather up a few tools and materials before you begin. Once you have these collected, continue with the next step:

  • Ratchet tool
  • Screwdrivers of various sizes
  • Replacement lower grille

Step 2 -- Open the Hood and Remove the Cover Screws

With the car off, open the hood and use a screwdriver to carefully remove the plastic screws that attach the cover of the grille to the grille itself. Set these screws aside for use later on, as you'll need them to reattach the cover when you put the new grille in place.

Step 3 -- Remove the Lower Grille Screws and the Grille Itself

Using your ratchet tool, carefully remove the lower grille screws. The lower grille is difficult to access, so it oftentimes helps to also remove the upper grille as well. Simply push the grille gently outwards from the interior of the frame in order to provide you with access to the screws. You can then use the ratchet to carefully remove the screws without damaging or bending the grille itself. Once you've removed all of the lower grille screws, carefully lift the grille out of the frame of the car and set it aside.

Step 4 -- Install the New Grille

Next, gently lower the new grille in place of the old one. Take care to ensure that the new grille doesn't scratch the other surfaces in the car, and be careful that you don't install the grille in a misaligned position. Maneuver it to the point where you like it before you reinstall the screws using the ratchet. Once you're satisfied, reinsert the screws and ensure that they're tight enough to keep the grille in place. Replace the cover on the grille if your vehicle has one.

Step 5 -- Replace the Grille Cover and Emblem

Finally, reinstall the plastic screws on the top of the grille cover to secure it in place and close the hood. If you had to remove the emblem from the hood of the car as you were working, you can now twist it back into place safely.

While the grille is removed, it's a good opportunity for you to inspect and clean some other parts of the car that may be in a difficult place to reach while the grille is fully attached.

If you have any other questions, ask a mechanic.
