Playmates and Mustangs Go Together Like Peanut Butter & Jelly

Playmates and Mustangs, has there ever been a more all-American combo? Perhaps, but as the photo above proves, there’s never been one that’s quite as fun to look at.

But this isn’t just any Playmate, and this isn’t just any Mustang, as we learn from The Drive‘s important article entitled “Vintage Playboy Models and Cars (Need We Say More?).” Apparently, ever since 1964, upon becoming Playboy‘s Playmate of the Year, the winner also get a new car, which she then poses with.

The Drive‘s A.J. Baime, who used to work as an auto/lifestyles editor at Playboy, completed the arduous task of combing through the last 50 years worth of PMOY auto spreads to pick the 15 best, including Donna Michelle posing with the 1964 (and a 1/2) Mustang you see here.

The issue hit newstands on April 19, 1964, just two days after Lee Iacocca and Henry Ford II debuted the original pony car for all the world to see at the New York World’s Fair. Certainly the car stood on its own merits, but this photo couldn’t have hurt the car’s immediate appeal.

We’ve included a few of the other Playmates of the Year posing with their cars below, for your viewing pleasure, but we doubt you’ll see one you like better than the iconic photo above.
