If you didn’t catch this bit of news from the SEMA show a couple weeks ago, the wild boys over at Roush Performance in Michigan have finally mastered a turbocharger. Their new technology will be seen first on the 2016 Ford Mustang Ecoboost four-cylinder models, though I’m sure this will extend to other turbo Ford models. The Mustang Ecoboost plays around in the 300 HP club, but Roush was able to squeeze out a ton more power. Their new turbocharger is said to produce a full-bodied 511 HP, laying down 465 lb-ft of torque. The power whipping out of the four-cylinder turbo is sure to fly off the line, providing high power to light car weight ratio. They brought the proof-of-concept, pictured above, to SEMA to show off and announce their new technologies.

ROUSH are well-known for their in-house designed high-powered quality superchargers. SEMA’s press release states the exhaust-driven turbocharger is designed and assembled with the same attention-to-detail as their proven supercharging system: ROUSHchargers. Showing from the HP/TQ gains, I’m sure that Roush engineers have done all they can to maximize performance along with reliability. Roush is the only supercharging performance company that is sold with a manufacturer’s warranty, which is decent at 3 years or 36,000 miles.

Over the past couple years Roush has been testing the waters of the Ford Ecoboost system. Parts they currently offer for the Ecoboost powered Mustangs are an axle-back exhaust system, cold-air intake, and an engine calibration. They package this all in one kit amounting to an 80 HP gain. The turbocharger will be the latest addition to the Ecoboost tuning line. The price of this Roush-built turbocharging kit hasn’t been released yet, but supercharger prices can probably be a good indicator.

Throughout past track events with my automotive press association, I’ve been able to feel out Roush products head to head against Saleen and Shelby. At the time I was working as a photographer in the passenger seat, but my behind and ears could feel the difference. Loud, rumbling fun on four wheels.

I wonder who will be the first to let Roush install this on their Ecoboost Mustang? I hope it’s someone who will hit the drag strip and make a couple videos, because Roush has released nothing but the little data about HP.
