Top Gear Tests Some World-Class Mustangs on Some of Scotland’s World-Class Roads

Opening on some of the prettiest roads in the world, with perfect lighting from a setting sun, Rory Reid puts a late ’60s classic Mustang through its paces in the Top Gear segment above. He laments about the driver seat being on the wrong side of the car. He complains about the old-world technology, brakes and steering that are merely a suggestion. When he finally does stop whining about the old car, he offers a solution to the problem: the new S550 Mustang GT and EcoBoost Mustang. It is quite interesting to see the perspective of non-Americans in regard to what may be America’s most iconic car.

As expected, Rory puts them through their paces. He’s impressed with how much the new Mustang has improved steering, suspension, and braking systems. Particularly in comparison to the tech from 40 years ago. With the excuse of an amusing panic stop for a sheep crossing, Mr. Reid then gives the GT’s line lock feature a workout.

Next comes the four-cylinder turbo EcoBoost ‘Stang, which Reid scoffs at. But he does say, “It’s not as bad as you’d think.” Which we suppose accounts for praise. Does the right-hand-drive Mustang actually work in the United Kingdom? The short answer is yes, but perhaps Ford has made it too good?

If you have not yet watched the most recent season of Top Gear, you owe it to yourself to do so. Chris Evans is a bit of a knob, and there are some bits that are a little annoying, but the recipe is still there. They’ve retained the gorgeous locations and phenomenal cinematography that we’re used to. There’s still the lighthearted chicanery and attempts at witty banter. It’s not the perfect car show, but it’s definitely better than whatever they’re doing over on The Grand Tour.
