Turbo Mustang Fail

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: turbos are ridiculously hard to tune properly. One software mistake or one wrong seal and the entire engine has a tendency to grenade itself at the most inopportune times.

I love turbo cars, though. They make great wooshy noises and generally have enough horsepower and torque to restart a small planet’s gravitational field. Unfortunately, the turbo Mustang below hasn’t really been tuned properly and, well, things go wrong quickly.

For one thing, it’s a turbo LSX Mustang, which is all sorts of wrong and all sorts of right. I’m not sure which way I’m leaning on this issue. All I know is that it sounds wonderful. Then the Mustang does a great starting burnout, lines up, and launches – hard. About halfway down the track, though, things get a bit sparky.

Essentially, this is what happened: the 88-mm turbo decided to leave town in a shower of sparks and flames. Again, turbos are a pain in the butt to tune.
