Fox Body Cobra Mustang Redefines Sleeper

You Don’t Often Find a Fox Body Cobra Worthy of the Term ‘Sleeper’

With easily recognizable wheels, a low front airdam, and a huge factory spoiler out back, a Cobra is generally known to be pretty quick. Especially when it sounds like this one. One thing you’d never expect from this relatively-stock-looking example, though, is that it pumps out over 1200 horsepower on the dyno.

The builders claim that the car is capable of even more, too. But they were forced to shut the car down at just 6,000 rpm because the rear drag slicks rubbed on the rocker skirts. That’s due to centrifugal diameter increase.

But could it be possible that this Mustang, looking like it just rolled out of the factory, is capable of 1400 horsepower? From a small block?

As you can see in the video below, at first pull, the Cobra puts down an already-astonishing 759 horsepower. But it is curtailed a bit when smoke starts to pour from the rear wheel arches. That’s where the tires start to rub. Still, being a bit cocky, when asked if the car had another 500 hp in it to take top honors of the day, the owner’s reply is priceless. “It should have another thousand.”

In the second run, the car manages to spin the drums to an asphalt-buckling 1,203 horses. With a 350-ish cubic inch engine and a pair of giant turbochargers putting out some serious boost, this car is ready to decimate all competition at the track. Just as soon as they figure out what size tires to use.

Look at the dyno sheet for the runs they did manage. You can see that the curve is still climbing dramatically at the point where the operator releases the throttle. If they’re saying 1400 horsepower, we might just believe them. 1700, however, and we’d have to see it.
