A lot of car enthusiasts catch a bad rap. We are labeled as reckless hooligans that do nothing more than terrify the streets, destroy tires, and waste gasoline. While it’s true that many enthusiasts do enjoy pushing the limits of ourselves and our vehicles, I can honestly say that most of my car loving friends know how to hoon carefully.

Still, sometimes people make bad decisions, and those decisions can have dire consequences. That appears to be what happened last week when an alleged street racing incident ended the lives of two innocent people and caused the severe injury of a third.

Details are still a developing, but police are reporting that a pair of cars convened at a set location for a “pre-planned” street race that was witnessed by more than 60 people. One of the cars was a “very powerful” Mustang, and that particular car lost control, hit a curb, and plowed up onto the sidewalk.

According to the Los Angeles Times: “Police identified the driver of the Mustang as Henry Michael Gevorgyan.” After initially fleeing the scene, the 21-year-old turned himself in and is now being charged with murder.

Police are actively looking for the other driver involved in the race. If you have any details, please call the Los Angeles Police Department.

We all love to have fun, I get it. I know that I have done some insanely stupid things in a car on public roads that I should have likely been arrested for. Thankfully in all of those situations things turned out OK in the end, but this just serves as a very somber reminder that cars are dangerous, and just because you are out on a mostly abandoned stretch of road at 2 AM doesn’t mean everyone will get out unharmed.

Just be careful out there. In a lot of ways the entire car community is one big family, and it always sucks to lose a family member to something that could have been prevented. I’m the farthest thing from the fun police when it comes to on-road mayhem, but I would hate to know any of our readers are in a six-foot hole or behind bars for one serious lapse in judgement.
