VIDEO: Ford Mustang Accessories — Hellwig Sway Bar Upgrade

By -

One of the best ways to make your Ford Mustang handle better
is to install a Hellwig sway bar upgrade. Accessories are
normally things that, when installed, add to the looks of your car. A
sway bar isn’t one of these. It’s a part that keeps your car’s body from
rolling or leaning when cornering hard. This article will list the
tools you’ll need to gather and the steps you’ll need to follow to
install your new front and rear Hellwig sway bar kits.

Required Tools

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel blocks
  • Ratchet
  • Extension
  • Sockets-15 millimeter deep and shallow & 9/16 shallow
  • Wrenches-11/16, 9/16, 5/8 & 8, 15 & 18 millimeter
  • Gloves (optional)
  • Rags

Step 1: Jack Up and Secure the Vehicle

Slide the jack under the front `K’ member and lift. Slide the jack
stands under the control arms and carefully lower it onto them.

Step 2: Remove the Factory Sway Bar

On one side, use the 8 millimeter wrench to hold the post on the end
link and use the 18 millimeter to remove the bolts. Use the 15
millimeter deep socket to remove the bolts that hold the frame mounts.
Pull the sway bar out.

Step 3: Install the New Sway Bar Bushings

Lubricate the bushings with the supplied lubricant. Line up the sway
bars and place the bushings in the corresponding locations. Mount the
collar clamps inside the frame bushings. Don’t tighten this down yet.

Step 4: Install the New Sway Bar

Lift the bar in place under the car. Install the new end links in the
middle holes. Tighten all the bolts. Now tighten the collar nut with
the supplied allen wrench.

Step 5: Lower the Front and Raise the Rear

Lift the jack and remove the stands. Lower the jack. Place the jack
under the differential and lift. Place the stands under the axle housing
and carefully lower.

Step 6: Remove the Old Sway Bar

Use the 15 millimeter socket to remove the 2 end link nuts on both
sides and the lower mount nuts. Remove the sway bar.

Step 7: Install Bushings on New Sway Bar

Match up the 2 sway bars and place the new bushings on the new bar.
You may need a hammer and/or a vise. Use a 9/16 socket and wrench to
tighten the main mounts.

Step 8: Install the New Sway Bar

Lift the new sway bar into place and install the mounts and brackets.
Use the middle end link holes. Use the 15 millimeter socket to tighten
all of the bolts.

Step 9: Lower the Vehicle and Test Drive

Lift the car off the jack stands and remove them. Lower the jack.
Take the car out and test drive it. If the ride is too soft, move the
end links to the forward-most hole. If it’s too hard, move to the
rear-most hole.

This article has listed the 9 steps required to replace both front
and rear sway bars and replace them with performance Hellwig aftermarket
bars.
