VIDEO: Ford Mustang Accessories – Magnaflow Exhaust Installation

By -

You want to install some new accessories on your newer Ford Mustang
and a Cat-Back System from Magnaflow Exhaust Products is one of them.
This new no maintenance exhaust will give you some noticeable increases
in performance. You should see an increase of 11 horsepower and 14 foot
pounds of torque in a 4.6 liter V8 (for example). This article will list
the steps necessary to take out your stock exhaust and replace it with
the Magnaflow aftermarket system.

Required Tools

  • Breaker bar
  • Rubber mallet
  • Ratchet
  • 13 millimeter socket (shallow and deep)
  • 15 millimeter deep socket
  • 3 or 5 inch extension for sockets
  • 13 millimeter open end or combination wrench
  • ½ inch open end or combination wrench
  • Floor jack (Low profile is preferable)
  • At least 2 jack stands
  • Wheel blocks
  • Safety goggles
  • Work gloves (optional)
  • Sawz-all (optional in case you want to just cut the old exhaust out)

Step 1: Jack up the Rear End

Place the jack under the differential and lift it until you can fit
easily underneath with room to work. Use the jack stands under the frame
or axle for safety. Block the front wheels.

Step 2: Remove the Old Muffler

Using the 13 millimeter socket, ratchet and extension, remove the 5
bolts holding in the 2 muffler hangers. With the 15 millimeter, remove
the clamp just behind the axle. Firmly wiggle the muffler back and forth
to remove it.

Step 3: Remove the Over the Axle Pipes

With the 15 millimeter deep socket, loosen the bolts on the band
clamps. Once the clamps are loosened, wiggle the pipes out. Removing the
pipe from under the car is made easier by cutting them in front of the
axle.

Step 4: Install the New Over the Axle Pipes

You’ll need to get the rear of the vehicle as high as you can for
this. You may need to use a shop lift. Couple the pipes and clamp the
down tightly.

Step 5: Reinstall the Hangers

With the 13 millimeter sockets and ratchet, reattach the muffler
hangers to the car.

Step 6: Install the New Mufflers

Slide the stock hangers onto the pegs on the mufflers. Slide the
clamp over the inlet and couple the muffler to the pipe. Tighten the
clamp securely. Ensure proper clearances.

Step 7: Double Check Torque on All Bolts and Clearances

The final step is to make sure that all of your bolts are torque to
approximately 60 to 65 foot pounds to ensure proper sealing of the pipe
junctions. Make sure the pipes and mufflers have at least ½ an inch of
clearance from everything under the vehicle, especially plastic parts.

Step 8: Lower

Lift the car off the stands, remove them and lower the jack.

This article has listed the 8 steps required to install new Magnaflow
mufflers.

It’s very highly recommended that the exhaust system be cold for your
added safety. Also, if the old exhaust doesn’t come out easily, you can
use the sawz-all plus a hacksaw blade to cut it out.  If you jack and
stands aren’t tall enough, you may need to look into renting shop space
to accomplish this project.
