paying more attention to the blinged out Mustangs and Foci packed
around it - or perhaps they were too busy watching the boys from Galpin
Auto building that classic green Mustang in the background. In any
case, I saw a great many people glance at this street rod and move on,
as the unique modern drivetrain was so seamlessly installed that many
might have assumed it to be a typical street rod packed with a V8.

However,
a closer look at this pristine '34 Ford coupe tells a very different
story. With cooperation from Ford Motor Company and a handful of
Michigan-based businesses, owner Kurt Kurtenbach has fitted a twin
turbocharged direct injection 3.5L V6 from the Ford Taurus SHO into his
beautiful street rod.

The Taurus SHO is offer in a front and
all wheel drive configuration and this engine is generally installed in
a much larger engine bay, so when Technosports Inc of Livonia modified
this 3.5L EcoBoost V6 for the 1934 Ford, they had to adjust the
position of the turbochargers on the engine to fit. They then mated
the EcoBoost V6 to a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission and a Ford 9"
rearend housing set up with 3.89 gears. To show a little more of the
potential of the impressive new 3.5L TT engine, the output was
increased to 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, giving this 1934
three window coupe plenty of bite to back up its bark.

Ford continues to show off this new EcoBoost engine and its not long
until the LA Auto Show, at which point we will find out what the new
engines are for the Mustang and if an EcoBoost Mustang is in the works!

paint design by Chip Foose, and Mr. Foose was in the Magnaflow display
this year at the SEMA Show to help show off the sweepstakes Mustang.

The
performance modifications begin with a Magnaflow Performance exhaust
system and an Edelbrock supercharger system to increase the power to
the wheels and a Baer big brake kit and Eibach suspension kit help the
Foose Magnaflow Mustang handle as well as it accelerates. A set of

One hint as to what we could see at SEMA was offered by yesterday, as Ford Racing issued a press release officially announcing the 2010 Ford Racing Boss 302R Mustang and some of the cars' specifications.

Paying homage to the success of the 1970 Boss Mustang in the racing world, the 2010 302R will be a race only model and production will be limited to just 50 units. The 2010 Boss 302R Mustang will come in the "standard" 302R form, or a Grand-Am Homologation package is available for those intending to compete in the KONI Challenge series. The 2010 Boss 302R has an MSRP of $79,000, and for those wanting a fully built race car, the Grand-Am prepped 302R will run you around $129,000.

Like the 1970 Boss 302, the 2010 302R will feature a 5.0L V8, but this modern 5.0L offers an "estimated" 400hp. The real power figures are more likely to be distributed once Ford has announced the power figures for the 2011 Mustang at this year's LA Auto Show, but with the Mustang GT expected to offer around 400hp from the 5.0L Coyote V8, I hope to see GT500-like power out of this $79,000 dollar race Mustang. The more expensive Koni Challenge Boss 302R comes with a "sealed high output race motor", and the SEMA Show could be the perfect venue for such a monster factory built race car.

This press release was issued just 12 days before the SEMA Show, and
with Ford Racing suggesting that all orders be submitted by the end of
this calendar year, we can expect more news about these new Ford Racing
models soon. For the time being, the mighty Boss is back, and in past
years when Ford has added the "R" designation to a model they have
often followed with a production model. What better way to roll out
the modern Boss Mustangs than to debut a heavily modified model at the
SEMA Show, followed by the production version along with the new engine
unveilings at the 2009 LA Auto Show?

There are no images
released of this car yet, as with a delivery date of Q3 or Q4 of 2010,
there probably hasn't been one produced, but many are expecting some of
them to follow the famous orange and black scheme of the championship

If rumors prove to be true, this technologically advanced V6 could find its way into the 2011 Ford Mustang.

The Ford Mustang has offered just two basic engine options for the past
20 or so years, with either a four or six cylinder powered base model
leading the way for a more powerful V8 option in the Mustang GT (not
including SVT models). However, if rumors about the new EcoBoost
engine finding its way into the 2011 Ford Mustang, we could have
ourselves a third basic trimline from Ford. We don't know what the
EcoBoost powered Mustang would be called, although some have thrown
around the ideas of it calling on the turbocharged Mustangs of the
1980s and sporting the SVO badging...or perhaps a new Turbo GT?

The EcoBoost 3.5L V6 packs a set of small turbochargers, and thanks to
the advancements in direction injection, the EcoBoost V6 makes an
impressive 365 horsepower and unlike many smaller engines using forced
induction for big power, the EcoBoost V6 has no lack of torque, with
350lb-ft of torque and almost no noticeable "boost lag" generated by
the tiny turbos.

This is the third of the three rumored engines for the 2011 Ford
Mustang, and although the Coyote 5.0L V8 is the only one not in
production, the EcoBoost may prove to be the last engine that we see
released, but should it be offered, it would fit perfectly between a
273-300 horsepower 3.7L V6 and the 400 horsepower 5.0L Coyote V8.
Should this engine lineup come to fruition, the 2011 Mustang, including
the mighty Shelby GT500, will easily be the most powerful Mustang
lineup ever offered.

- Patrick Rall

What do you think of a third factory option for the Mustang? Would the Ecoboost pull you away from the standard V6 and GT? Is it strange to see a non-NA baseline Mustang, even though Mustangs are more routinely boosted these days? Does it seem strangely uncharacteristic for the Mustang?

The Ford Mustang has introduced a great many now-famous engines throughout its long history, but none have had the following of the 5.0L V8. The "five-o", as it is affectionately known, disappeared from the Mustang lineup after 1995 as the new modular 4.6L V8 took its place. Many believe the 5.0 may return in the 2011 Ford Mustang.

The news of the new 5.0L V8, code named "Coyote" within Ford Motor
Company, began when an overseas member of the Ford management group
commented on the upcoming engine. These rumors were further bolstered
by a comment made earlier this year by Ford chairman Bill Ford Jr.
While discussing the wide range of new engines coming from Ford in the
next few years, Ford mentioned that the Mustang would be available with
a 400 horsepower engine. Now, this could have been Ford misspeaking
about the GT500, but it is more likely another hint to the return of
the fabled five-o to the Ford Mustang.

The Coyote 5.0L V8 is currently not in use anywhere in the world, so
there is no clear proof of the engines capabilities like we have with
the other two expected engines for the 2011 Mustang. However, the
gigantic power advantage held by Chevrolet and Dodge combined with the
public outcry when the sleek new 2010 Mustang received just a 15
horsepower gain wont likely go unanswered by the folks at Ford. A 400
horsepower variant of the Mustang GT would make it the most powerful
Mustang GT ever offered, and with the weight advantage over both the
Camaro and Challenger, the twenty-something horsepower disadvantage
faced by a 400hp Coyote V8 powered Mustang would likely be easily
overcome.

The Auto Show season is approaching quickly, and with SEMA only a month
away and the Detroit Auto Show around two and a half months out, we
expect official news from Ford Motor Company soon about the future of
the Ford Mustang engine lineup.

- Patrick Rall

Is this what you wanted? We can fully expect a new entry level V6, possibly a beefed up version
of the Duratec 37. That 3.7L V6 offers 273 horsepower in its current
Mazda SUV uses, but with tuning adjustments it is expected that the
Duratec 37 could make 300 horsepower. The Mustang GT also stands to benefit from a new engine, and most
people in the automotive world would be shocked if it is not the return
of the 5.0L V8. The 32 valve "Coyote", as it is known within Ford
Motor Company, is expected to offer at least 400 horsepower to help get
the Stang closer to the Challenger SRT8 and Camaro SS in power output.
There have been spy shots available since early in 2009 of what is
perceived to be the Coyote in an S197 Mustang engine bay, so the Coyote
is all but available-for-sale.

What we aren't sure about, is whether or not Ford's EcoBoost V6 will
find it's way into the Mustang. The 3.5L twin turbocharged V6 offers
an impressive 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, and since the
EcoBoost hit the market, there have been rumors of an 'EcoBoosted'
Mustang, but there hasn't been anything from Ford to support these
rumors. (For my previous article about the EcoBoost fitting into the
Mustang, click here!)

There are also rumors that the 2011 GT500 could see an improvement to
the engine, although it looks like the GT500 will still come with a
supercharged 5.4L engine. The change to the GT500 will most likely be
the addition of an aluminum engine block, as there have been well
publicized videos of Ford test vehicles using an aluminum block 5.4L
engine.

Again, until Ford stops teasing us and releases the official
information at the LA Auto Show in December, these are all rumors and
speculation, but it looks like the Mustang will finally be getting the
horsepower that the Ford faithful have been demanding.
Information released on the 2011 Ford Mustang contained no official engine announcements, but there are rumblings that suggest a much more powerful 3.7L Duratec V6 could replace the popular 4.0L variant. The 4.0L V6 of the 2005-2010 base model Mustang proved to be great, both stock and modified, but with the current Chevrolet Camaro offering 300hp in their base V6 models, Ford is expected to answer the challenge with their 3.7L Duratec.

The Duratec 37, as it is known within Ford Motor Company, is currently
offered in the 2010 Lincoln MKS and the Mazda CX-9, and it makes an
impressive 273 horsepower. The rumors surrounding the 3.7L V6 Duratec
finding its way into the 2011 Mustang also including ideas of adding
enough power to equalize the advantage of the base model Camaro. The
Mustang does have a slight weight advantage over the Camaro, so even in
the event that the Mustang gets the 3.7L V6 in the same form as the
Lincoln MKS, it could be pretty even in performance capabilities with a
slight disadvantage in horsepower. However, Ford has been working
intensively with direct injection on their EcoBoost engines, and should
that technology be applied to the Duratec 37, we could easily see a 300
horsepower base model Mustang - offering 40 more horsepower than the
2004 Mustang GT.

Until Ford Motor Company releases official information on the 2011 Ford
Mustang, this is all just speculation but with Auto Show season quickly
approaching, we are sure to learn soon exactly what is in store for the
2011 Mustang. If these rumors prove to be true, the 2011 Mustang will

Mustang is, but within the Mustang community the turbocharged
4-cylinder Mustangs of the 1980s are well recognized for their
performance. The EcoBoost engine could very well make a modern SVO or
Turbo GT, and the 365 horsepower would nestle it nicely between the
base and the GT. Of course, it's easy to say "the base model Mustang
should have 365hp instead of 210", but with the likely Coyote V8
pushing the GT up to and hopefully over the 400 horsepower mark, there
is room to fit a 365 horsepower option in, without stepping on the GTs
toes too much. Not to mention, the 365 horsepower EcoBoost drivetrain
found in the 2010 Taurus SHO features all wheel drive, and still gets
an EPA estimated 17/25 mpg - where as the 210 hp 2010 Mustang V6 gets
18/26.

get an idea of just how great the new EcoBoost is, I headed down to
Dorian Ford yesterday and Lisa Zerilli set me up with few hours in a
2010 Ford Taurus SHO, as well as a few hours in a 2010 Mustang base
model. This gave me an idea of what the current 4.0L V6 drivetrain
feels like, compared to the drivetrain that could replace it in 2011.
All I can say about the EcoBoost drivetrain is "wow". I expected it to
be strong, as 365hp and 350lb-ft of torque is big power in any cars,
but it's a Taurus, right? I was blown away by how powerful and smooth
this car is, from the seamless shifts of the paddle shifters to the
silent interior...the SHO is worth the hype.

The way that I see it, the only thing preventing the perfect marriage
of the EcoBoost V6 and the Mustang from happening is the cost of the
EcoBoost engine. The 2010 Mustang base model is priced at an
affordable $22,190 as tested, but the Taurus SHO rings in quite a bit
higher, with a sticker price of $45,250. Granted, the SHO is more than
just a powerful engine, but the technology behind the EcoBoost engine
has to come with a price, and no one would buy an "lower level"
EcoBoost Mustang with a bigger price tag than the Mustang GT. However,
if Ford can put the EcoBoost in the Mustang, without pricing it higher
than the GT, we could very easily see a base model, twin turbo Mustang
that would send the V6 Camaros packing.
In their press release (below), Steeda comments that there has been
extensive testing of the 2010 Q Series Mustang, so that would lead me
to believe that we won't be seeing a Coyote 5.0 under the hood just

A few months ago we teased you with a disguised "sneak peak" of our
latest high performance Mustang - now, in advance of it's upcoming
official debut in a few short weeks, we are pulling the wraps off and

production based classes than the Steeda Q Series of high performance
Mustangs and I am confident that our 2010 version will carry on that
same Steeda tradition" commented Dario Orlando, the founder of Steeda
Autosports, "In all of our Q-Series of high performance Mustangs, we
never compromise or take shortcuts, our customers who demand maximum
performance, bullet-proof reliability, and class leading race honed
styling wouldn't have it any other way!"

will have it's official public debut at the 2009 SEMA Show in Las
Vegas, Nevada on November 3, 2009. Follow future Press releases for

The 2010 Shelby GT500 was developed by Ford's Special Vehicles Team
(SVT) in consultation with race car legend Carroll Shelby. The
GT500KR's influence starts with the 32-valve, dual overhead cam
5.4-liter V8, which gains 40 horsepower to 540 and 30 pound-feet of
torque to 510. The power increase can be traced to a lower restriction
exhaust system with four-inch outlets and a new open element cold-air
intake ram air system, a version of which debuted on the GT500KR.

SVT officials say the GT500's performance has been improved in every
way. A higher numeric rear axle ratio (3.55:1 versus 3.31:1) should aid
acceleration. The six-speed manual transmission's twin-disc clutch is
larger (250 mm versus 215 mm), and the transmission has revised fifth
and sixth gear ratios for better highway fuel economy.

The KR also contributed to the new GT500's suspension. The 2010 GT500
gets new stabilizer bars and shock damping, and the spring rates are 13
percent stiffer up front and seven percent stiffer in the rear. The
standard wheels will be cast-aluminum 18s, and forged alloy 19s will be
optional. Ford's AdvanceTrac electronic stability control will be
standard, and it will come with three settings: on, Sport, and off.
Anti-lock brakes will also be standard, as will front and side airbags.

Designers also worked to improve aero balance and therefore improve
handling. New designs for the front splitter and rear spoiler increase
front downforce and decrease it in the rear. This moves the center of
pressure forward and closer to the center of gravity, which aids
handling.

The 2010 Shelby GT500 also got the revised body from the updated 2010
Mustang, as well as a new powerdome hood with a large functional air
extractor, a large mouth front end design with hints of Shelby's iconic
AC Cobra, and new body side stripes. Inside, the GT500 adds some neat
touches and the higher quality interior materials used for the revised
base Mustang, including a soft-skin dashboard. Muscle car fans will
appreciate the striped cue ball-style shift knob. Also new are satin
aluminum trim and suede-like alcantara material for the seat inserts,
shift boot, parking brake boot, and steering wheel. The seats and shift
knob will also have striping that matches the exterior color. Ford's
Sync system and ambient lighting will also be standard. A
voice-activated navigation system will be optional.

Ford points out that the Mustang has been in continuous production for
45 straight years, and that more than 9 million Mustangs have been
built and sold so far. That makes the Mustang the most continuously
produced single model in Ford's history.

For 2010, there are three body styles, a coupe, a convertible, and
a glass-roof coupe, all available in the V6 Deluxe model and
the V8-powered GT versions, followed by the Shelby.

The 2010 Mustang exterior design is new from end to end. Among the
highlights: integrated multi-element headlights replacing the twin
round lamps of past Mustangs, a power-dome hood that droops over the
grille at its leading edge, completely new side sculpting, and
chamfered three-element taillights that house sequential turn signals,
blinking from the inside lamp to the outside lamp (a technology first
used on the 1964 Thunderbird, reprised 46 years later).

Ford says the new Mustang body yields 23 percent less aerodynamic lift
at the front, and is 12 percent quieter in wind noise than the outgoing
car, 15 percent in the case of the convertible. Ford also points to a
33 percent reduction in squeak and rattle performance, and a 10 percent
improvement in speech intelligibility due to interior noise reductions,
especially in the convertible.

The 2010 Mustang coupe and convertible comes standard with an
upgraded 4.0-liter V6 engine rated at 210 horsepower and 240
foot-pounds of torque, with standard 17-inch tires and wheels and
optional 18-inch tires and wheels. A rear stabilizer bar has been made
standard on V6 versions, and the entire suspension system retuns for more performance feel.

The 2010 Mustang GT got an upgraded 4.6-liter 3-valve V8 engine, rated at 315 horsepower and 325 foot-pounds of torque, slightly
up from the previous model. The redline has been raised 250 rpm to 6500
rpm. The engine has two built-in calibrations for regular or premium
fuel.

Both engines are available with a choice of a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission.

The new V8 engine gets its cold intake air from a system built into the
grille, not under the hood, the lowest-restriction air intake system
ever on the Mustang, with an air induction sound pipe that goes right
into the cockpit to make it more pleasing to the driver. On the exhaust
side, the V8 version gets 3.5-inch exhaust pipes versus 3.0-inch pipes
on the last Mustang, and the V6 version gets 3.0-inch exhaust pipes
instead of 2.5-inch pipes. The standard axle ratio is 3.31:1, with two
optional ratios, 3.55:1 or 3.73:1, which automatically comes with
larger brakes.

The GT chassis is upgraded and stiffened using parts and pieces
from the 2009 Bullitt Mustang, which means it rides tauter, turns in
quicker and has less pitch, dive and body roll than any previous
Mustang. Indeed, we were very impressed with the fine-tuning done to
the Bullitt.

The 2010 Mustang rides on 235/50R18 tires, with 245/45R19 tires
optional, on several different wheel designs. If the 19-inch tire and
wheel option is ordered, the car is automatically built with a
strut tower brace under the hood to connect the two front struts for
more strength and better, more accurate handling. Anti-lock brakes,
traction control and AdvanceTrac yaw control are standard on all
models.

An optional Track Package includes upgraded front brakes, a
recalibrated AdvanceTrac system and the 3.73:1 axle ratio. Track
Package II includes the Pirelli 19-inch tires and wheels, upgraded
front and rear brakes and heavier springs, shock absorbers and brakes
along with recalibrated traction and yaw control systems for weekend
racing. That sounds like the hot setup for someone who wants a
dual-purpose car for street and track. Buy one of these and you
instantly have a hobby. At the start of production, Ford will offered a
wide array of performance and appearance options for the new Mustang,
up to and including a complete bolt-on supercharger kit.

Inside, the 2010 Mustang has a completely new approach to interior
design, with throwback instrument design complemented by softer-feeling
surfaces throughout. Interior and sill plate lighting colors can be
changed through a range of 125 colors with the flip of a switch with
the new MyColor system. New features for Mustang include a rear-facing
