I'd like to try to swap my automatic trans for a later model with overdrive. I drive a lot on the HWY here in the DC area and really would like to drop the RPMs. I've got 3.25 gears in the 9" and would like to keep it as is. I know there are a few specialty shops in CA that have an overdrive that attaches to the rear of the stock trans but I'm not interested in that...or the $2500.00 price tag.

So, does anyone have one of those Ford Interchange manuals/book that might tell me that a "19?? AOD trans from a Ford ???? will fit a 1968 Conv't big block (390)." Preferably, it would be nice if it was a direct bolt-on swap with no modifications.

Theres no such thing as a "no modification" AOD swap. You can use an AOD from a Mustang between the years 1989 -1993. You can't use AODE (the E is for Electronic) trans.
Things you need to do in order to make the swap.

New Trans mount.
Trans mount member.
Drive shaft. (Either shorten your original or have another one shortened. (Its only about an inch)
Throttle (TV cable). Runs from the trans to the carb (This enables the trans to go into Overdrive)Needs to be adjusted to pressure.
Flex plate (flywheel) I'm not sure which one a 390 would use.
Shift linkage..again, not sure how it works on a 390. Some console shifters mount once the trans linkage is reversed, others link right up.
Column shifters, I have no idea.
There's also torque converter issues. Locking , non locking. Again,for your particular arrangement I'm not sure.

Its well worth the swap. Its not strictly bolt on, but its a nice winter project.

Your right, I guess what I really meant was I didn't want to modify the body/frame itself. In other words, I'm not going to cut any holes in the car so this could work. I should have been more clear.

Thanks for the start...you mentioned a few things I'll need to look into.
It would be nice if someone (manufacturer) would produce such a kit...I can't believe there aren’t a lot of guys with big blocks that wouldn't want to have an overdrive trans in their classic...oh well.

You would have to make crossmember or buy one. (see the last issue of Mustang Monthly)
You have to modify your shifter or replace with a B+M unit.

No other hacking to your car required.

You can use a AODE or 4R70W but it's expensive. visit becontrols.com

3.25 is a nice gear for economy with an AOD

I've done the swap more than once and it's a pain at times but worth it.

I forgot to mention the big block adapter, I saw the sight posted here one time. Can't remember the name.

I think they missed the 390 there. To use the AOD with an FE you will have to saw off the bellhousing. Order a new one from Performance Automatic or Lentech in Canada. They cost about 650-750 last time I checked. Also will need one of their special converters to fit the pilot and belhousing. am installing an AODE in my 67 with a 302. I am using a Baughman controler. They run about $575.
