Is there a chart somewhere which tells me how wide a rim has to be to fit a certain widthtire?
For example what's the widest tires I can fit on an 18"x9" rim? I am thinking I should have ordered 10" rims for the back of my 07, and now I would like to see what limitations I have in choosing a tire size now.
As a side note I was just able to fit 275s on my 2002's stock 17" rims - they made a little shiny spot inside the front wwell, but thats all.
I just dumped some cash on 17" GT take offs (alloy) and got my Nitto 555s today (255/45/17), and that calculator is telling me that the diameter difference is too high (4.2%) Is this a good time to panic? [&:]

If I got 275's on my stock 2002 GT's 17" rims I would think you should be fine, but I dont recal the width of my stock rims - I thought it was 8" or 8.5".

You will have NO issues at all with installing the 255/45 tires on stock wheels! See pics; Our car with 255/45/17 & stock suspension,
again stock suspension w 255/45/17,
Now lowered an inch and a half with 255/45/17,
The stock 235/55/17 vs 255/35/20 and 285/30/20 (I installed after the lowering strut and spring kit) If you go this wide you'll need wider rimes!
I don't have pic of them on the car yet! But compare the width to the stock 235/55 Pirelli!

The general rule is this. The Tire should be no more than 4" wider that the rims width. In other words if you have a 20x10 wheel you would not want to put a tire on that was wider than 14" in width. So for a 17x8.5 you can go to a 12.5" wide tire

275/40-17 is the perfect tire for our 17x8 rims...ok not mathematically perfect, but perfect look and maximum width in back at least, and no issues whatsoever
