would you recommend the stock air box or is it worth it to use an aftermarket CAI with the CDC shaker as well? I thought the CDC shaker would have been the 'ultimate' CAI, but I've spoken to CDC and they seem bullish on using either a Steeda or C&L CAI along with this kit for even better performance.
Honestly Dan, the Shaker system will add next to nothing in HP gains when hooked up like the way I had on my K&N CAI heatshield (or any other CAI out there). Sure, at highway speeds it'll provide additional 'cool air' to the side of the air filter, but that's it. It's not forced induction.
The best performancegain will come from the factory airbox, IMO. Having it mostly sealed, it will suck air from the shaker tube, especially when rev'd up. Still, I can't see thegain go over 5 HP at most.
If you opt for an aftermarket CAI, the ductwork will need to be custom fitted to the heatshield, it won't simply match up (like to the factory airbox).
I'll be ditching my K&N soon in favor of a C&L Racer. I've already removed all my ducting because I modified my Shaker shroud (for my soon to arrive FRPP chrome camcovers). Now, any ram air will just blow into the back of the engine bay.

interesting you're moving to the C&L...that's what the guy at CDC recommended to me (!) You'd think they'd package it up with a modified airbox if it was that beneficial.
Oh well, the shaker still looks darn good on the hood!
BTW even though I already have the CDC shaker, I've also recentlylooked at the one used by Fang performance and the one sold by KarKraft. They appear to be absent of any plumbing out of the back sidetherefore negating the airbox modifications(?) so I'm curious how the air gets from outside the shaker into the filter?

IMO, in the future you should seriously consider compiling all your write-ups into a book. Something like "DIY 2005-07 Mustang projects".. I used to work in publishing, and if you manage to hook up with the right people, getting a book made isn't too hard. And once you get the book out there, you'd have a side income to put towards your son's college, etc. Just a thought..
Thanks AJ. Writing a book seems a bit overwhelming to me right now, but you never know what opportunites will open up for me in a year. Heck, my first 'how-to' was just written a little over a year ago, the Steeda Ultralite lowering springs.
In the meantime, I'll just keep compiling them. [8D]
You pretty much covered everything that went into that install, nice write up. Now i have a place to send people when they ask me how i installed my shaker. I didn't get the idea to write up anything on my install until after i cut that huge hole in my hood. I still don't have the proper type of tube installed on my shaker yet because my car is a 245 cu in and i have a Vortech there is not enough room to install a tube to the air filter but i am still looking for ideas.

Appearance wise, the Shaker and the stripes have the greatest visual impact on my car. Which is not always a good thing when a cop is nearby.
1. All in all, the install wasn't too difficult. Total time was around 10 hours (spread over 3 days). The only snag I came across was from the K&N CAI, but after some head scratching, a solution was found (thanks to the hump hose). If you have a stock intake, knock off at least 3 hours. Basically can be all done on a Saturday!
2. Yes!, Yes!, and most definitely YES!
I 've heard of shops charging anywhere between $200 - $400 to install this Shaker kit. If you're considering it, save a gang of money and do it yourself. And, I canjust aboutguarantee that your gaps will be more even compared to what a shopcan do.
