I'd like to know if anyone out there uses a portable GPS unit in their 'stang. I want to install my Nuvi 260W, but I hate the cluttered look of wires and brackets, etc. I want it to be portable so I can remove it from sight when I exit the vehicle. I've seen some of these cigarette lighter (power outlet) mounts and/or mounts that use a long flexible tube which mounts off a bolt on the front of the seat track. I don't know how secure something that pushes into the power outlet would be?
I want something clean, removable and I don't want to drill or mount anything permanently nor do I want to leave a bunch of brackets and disconnected wires after I've left the vehicle.
Anybody go through this?...can anyone help?.....If so, pictures, etc would help immensely.
Thanks

I have a Magellan 4250 I think. I use it in both my vehicles so I just mount it on the windshield and plug it into the power outlet. I will eventually buy an in-dash one but I dont use them very often.
It is pretty much legal, as it doesn't really block any of my view of the road. In Calif they could cite you if it blocks your view.
I use the power outlet on long trips, but kept the wire tie on its cord, so it doesn't hang all over the dash. When I park the car I just unplug it and throw the whole thing into the console.
I have just about the same Magellan, mounted in the same place, and do the same thing with the cord as Orion 240's. If you leave it tied up and as short as possible when plugged in, you barely even notice it.

FYI new law 1/09 regarding mobile GPS in CA...
SB 1567
Requires portable GPS devices that are affixed to a vehicle windshield to be placed either in a seven-inch square in the lower right corner of the windshield or in a five-inch square in the lower left corner, while the vehicle is being driven. Motorists may still mount a GPS device on top of the dashboard as long as it doesn't block their view of the road.
The device must not be placed so that it interferes with the deployment of an air bag. The fine for a violation is approximately $108 including penalties, depending on the county
I have a tomtom and it has a disk that I have dbl taped to the area between the
center outlets. The only time I plug it in is for long trips. I charge it in the house
every couple of weeks.
I also have the cord folded up with zip ties so it is the length needed to reach
the power outlet.
