I hate that i can drop my clutch from 2k or so and have to wait a sec for it to get going. Will a tuner speed that time up? if so how much really? Theres one for $200 shipped in the s197 classifieds and he lives an hour from me so i could just pick it up.

Pulled off the ball, cut the antenna even with the roof, filed it a bit so the ball would fit back on, superglued the ball back, shot it with black spray paint to cover a few scratches.
Tuner is hardware that loads software into your ecu that controls how your car operates. Allows you to adjust things so you can make gains from mods.
A tuner is a hand-held electronic device that plugs into the car's computer. The tuner can, in the hands of someone that knows what they are doing, change the computer's settings. It is used to optimize the car's power after modifications and to squeeze out a few more HP.
It is the modern version of a "Speed chip" that you may have heard of a few years ago.
And to the OP: Yes, a CAI and tune will greatly improve the typical lag problem. I'm not sure if a tuner alone will do so...

A used handheld tuner alone is not your answer since any tunes in it will not work on your car unless specifically written for your cars PCM. You'll have to buy new tunes to dowload onto the tuner. The functions that resolve throttle lag are not user-adjustable. The vendor that writes your tune can make those adjustments.
And if you're going the route of getting a tune, do it right and get a CAI & tune combo.
+1 on Norm's suggestion. I'll try to find and post the link to the thread for that. I believe there's a recalibration procedure which does not involve disassembly plus a thread on making a physical adjustment.
Here's the recal procedure (cut & paste from another section)...
"Turn the key to ON (DO NOT START THE CAR!) and wait till all the normal lights in the dash go out, then slowly press the gas pedal until it is floored and release. Turn the key off, wait about 6 seconds and then start your car. Give it a try.
This will reset the throttle body settings and give the car a crisper feel. This is not a permanent fix but does help out every so often. Also unplugging you negative battery cable for 15 minutes will reset some settings but is not recommend unless you know what you are doing."
I believe the time to leave the battery cable disconnected is 20 minutes per a previous post by 157db. This resets the adaptive learning.

A tune increased my throttle response, the car felt very crisp and on edge after I loaded up the boxed tune. *IGNORE WHAT WAS HERE FOLLOW WHAT NUKE SAID FOR THROTTLE POSITION RESET!*
and if you have an automatic it will help there too.
and what do you know...I have a tuner and a CAI for sale!
