the more i look at the hoodliner, the more im tempted to just take it off. has anyone done this without any problems? does it look ok besides the holes now exposed?

Mine's off. No problems yet, even with vinyl on the hood. The underside was not completely painted, however, and there's a gold-colored finish right underneath where the OE hood scoop is. The average person wouldn't notice it unless they went looking for it or it was pointed out. I don't know how white works in this regard.
If you're gentle with the plastic retaining pegs, you could take the liner off to see how it would look and put it back on if you're not happy with it off.

The hoodliner is there to put out engine fires if you do not currently have an engine fire it's useless to you. It doesn't noticably quiet the car either FYI.

It's not really needed, but its function serves to help suppress an engine fire. If you're using ebay fuel parts, keep it on...otherwise you should be fine.

Chris07GT took his off. He had the hood painted underneath and it turned out real nice. Ask him and see what he thinks about it.
It's fine with it off, but like the other poster said, it isn't fully painted underneath and on my car it looked like a$$ when I took it off. I took it to a local dealer to get the underhood painted and it came out great:
