Default Intercooler big difference?

So my car runs extremely hot over here in AZ with the temps from 110-120 in the summer time. The vortech runs great but my car runs upwards of 170-180 IAT..I think I am going to make the jump and do the intercooler because it runs so hot but my question is how much difference will it do temp wise??

This isn't an apples to apples comarison but I can give you some numbers from my recent intercooler upgrade:

Non-intercooled I was seeing 140's-150's during normal driving with 70's-80's ambient temps and a high of 195 under acceleration.

Now I've seen a high of low 100's during stop and go traffic. On the road it's staying within 10 degrees of ambient and doesn't spike up under acceleration. In fact it gets cooler when I give it gas.

When I complete the upgrade with dual fuel pumps and a smaller pulley I'm pretty sure I'll just pull the iat2 sensor and stick with the frpp tune (current tune uses iat2's) because iat2's are that stable.

I'd say go for it and don't look back.

Bruce

So that's what you ran on your whipple before you added an intercooler? Do you think its safe to say I could see equal improvements?

Don't know. It would have to be better than it is now.

It's one of those where if its not gonna make a substantial difference it's going to be hard to justify it. Any one else have numbers for me?

Answer from Brenspeed.

TEST S/C TEMP OUT TB TEMP IN
CRUISE 124.6 73.8
WOT EXTENDED (3RD) 187.2 80.8
IDLE 5 MIN W/ AC 136.1 77.1
HIGHWAY CRUISE @ 60 145.1 85.3
EXTENDED WOT (4TH) 203.7 92.3
60-65 MPH CRUISE 127.8 70.4

All of these tests were done in sequence at the same time and data logged
during a city/highway drive.

This test was done on a 10 psi kit @ redline.

Ambient air temp was 67 degrees F

The temp is lower that what it would be in Arizona but the test does show
how effective the charge cooler is.

Is the S/C TEMP OUT the IAT that my gauge reads?

I have specifics for my air/air intercooler with my Vortech, and in sizzling Texas heat (ok, puny compared to AZ temps perhaps). And I've monitored and datalogged IATs to see what they are doing, in relation to ambient temps.
Normally, under stop-and-go heavy traffic/city driving, my iats would be within 10-20* of ambient, even in 100-105 temps. Under a little more open road/cruising, they are typically 2-5* above ambient, even with the summer heat. Getting into WOT will bump it up a little after a hard run/acceleration, but still stays well under 20* above ambient, and then cools right back down when out of the hard run.

I'm sure the IATs would indeed be well up into 170's and above without the intercooler, although I've never measured them ahead of the intercooler.

What was your IAT's temps? So like a tops of 20 over on WOT would be like 120-135?

mach im in the same boat as you, it seems 9 out of 10 people with the vortech have the HO. i don't know that i can justify the extra $1500 or whatever it is when the power i have now is already enough to satisfy me. it's more the peace of mind knowing my engine isn't getting too hot. i'm in minnesota though, and we have had a mild summer, only a few days over 90 degrees.

the HO kit is worth it IMHO, just do the math, $/hp and the added power is less costly on a $/hp basis then the added power of just the std kit.

I see 150*+ IATs ONLY after back to back pulls with ambient temps in the 75-80* range.

Cruising typically I see IATs 20-25* higher then ambient. Highway pulls from 40ish-120ish I may see 125-130*.
