Weird. Ford actually uses, or at least used awesome batteries. My '00 Ranger has about 115K still the original battery. I never drive the truck (company vehicle driven now), so the last two times I've needed her, she needed to be jumped. But it's literally about a month of sitting there.
My dad's '96 F-250 also has the original battery. He only has about 60K on it, but still...........a 13 year old battery?!?!!!
I agree with riptide... there is a TSB out on it and they advise people with shaker sound systems to turn off the stereo before you turn off or exit the car.. I DD mine.. probably the only reason I haven't had any problems..
These batterys are garbage mine lasted about 17k miles and then I let it sit for a week and of course it was dead not even charging it worked the dealer wanted to charge me $100 for a new battery, instead I bought a red top and happy know.

I hope the stang's battery lasts this long!
My 99 ford ranger had the same battery for 7 years when I sold it. It also sat for long periods of time. My battery is dead again after sitting for 3 days, so I'm going to replace it tomorrow. That's assuming the thing will charge over night.
Are the stock batteries maintenance free or do they need water?

The OEM batteries are supposed to be maintenance free, but they have caps so that you can add water. It would not hurt to check them once in a while.

I checked the battery and it had plenty of water. Napa didn't have any batteries so I ended up with a duralast from autozone. $82 for a battery and it's probably only slightly better than the stock one.
