Doc there is no doubt in needing a catch can (esp for FI). When I pulled off my intake (since I have FI now) the butterfly's were all oiled up...not a lot but only had maybe 3K miles on the car.
Not sure if a 0.5 sec gain from this mod is really that accurate but it does prove that the factory system is not very good at all and a catch can is a must for improved performance and longevity of the motor. Many conditions (as you know) can influence/change or improve/worsen the times like weather (temp, humidity, barometric pressure, etc).

I wouldn't think that it would gain 0.5 seconds either, but then again all of the conditions were pretty close. If you look on the datalogs, you can see on the left hand side that the intake air charge was within a few degrees and the baro was within 0.6 or so. However, both runs were made on the exact same stretch of highway, and all of my previous datalogs (before the catch can) showed the same timing spikes and had the same time span between the same RPM's and speed. I'd split the difference between the intake air temp/baro and the oil catch can.... lol.
I think with the ECU having to pull timing like it was, it could definately affect the acceleration.
Just one thing to remember, leave the brass filter inside of the DIY oil catch can. I have heard of people removing the filter, or drilling holes in it to promote airflow. I had holes drilled in mine at first, then got another filter since the hoses allow more airflow than the stock PCV tube. After installing the new filter, I pulled the hose off of the PCV at idle and it had PLENTY of vacuum. People that say they still saw oil getting through probably removed the filter or drilled holes in it.
Do you have a link? All I can find is one that their website shows is for up to 2004 mustangs.
If you read on it tells you that it is for use on any car. They just have instructions for the 2004. I bought my unit from my performance shop-GTR they are also installing it. I have 0 technical ability.

Kudos for doing what is arguably the most important mod on S197 mustangs. I installed a Moroso unit a couple years back and noticed an immediate gain in WOT performance.
