Thanks everyone, I appreciate your help. Even the salesguy made fun of the antenna, it's like the only new car that still has an exterior one.
Most new cars have an antenna don't they? Anyway, I got one of the shorty's AJ mentioned. Don't care about reception, with USB/Sirius I don't listen to FM radio...ever.
I found this really funny. I was watching TV and saw a Ford commercial for the 2010 Mustang. I had to do a double take when I noticed they took the antenna off for the commercial! It looks pretty funny when you look for it. I paused my DVR and took a pic.

I believe I've seen (either) some sales brochures or pictures in magazines (reviews) where they did the same thing.
It wasn't as obvious as your DVR snapshot, but you could tell that an antenna should be poking up in the picture, yet it was missing.
Apparently, there's a disconnect between the marketing/advertising folks and the engineering folks at Ford, huh?

The car looks better without the antenna. Even Consumer Reports magazine does not show the antenna sometimes. Shame on them.

Watching a show on TV (NBA on TNT) -- sponsered by autotrader.com ...
So in the AutoTrader commercial, they have a lady choosing a car. She narrows it down (to a Mustang, of course ) -- but as I watched the stream of Mustangs pour into her cul-de-sac, seems they removed the antennas also. (I know that commercial is computer enhanced, and they don't have 50+ mustangs running along side by side -- so it's probably just removed by the special effects folks.)
I do know this commercial was out before the 2010 models arrived on the scene (having seen it all through last year's NBA season), so I was looking for the antenna up on the front quarter. Nada.
Come to think of it, a '79 Camaro I used to drive had the antenna in the windshield too. And it was for both AM/FM.
I'm not sure why that design idea didn't stick around in automobiles; sure it makes windshield replacement more expensive, but that couldn't have been the reason they did away with, right?
Maybe the reception through them wasn't so good. Too far back for me to recall.
My 81 Z has it in the windshield too. As far as FM reception goes, I took it on a long road trip and it wasnt noticeably different than the 05 Ranger I drove on the same route a different time. The oil consumption was WAY less in the Ranger, though lol.
I cant figure out why they don't integrate the antenna better. It would be nice if it was tied into the rear window somehow so that it wouldn't increase the windshield cost. Or even a good ol' fashioned power retractable antenna...
I want one, but I losten to alot of AM radio. How is AM reception?
Ditto; AM radio or MP3s most all the time.
My AM reception is fine with the shorty, but that's a product of locality (the surrounding terrain and broadcasting points within my area) and/or station preferences -- my guess.
Many folks have complained about poor reception over the standard AM/FM bands (at least on the '10 model with the stock antenna.)
Haven't taken her on out of town but once, but it was OK even then.
