well, from my experience, pinging can be caused by the gas you are running....either bad or lower octane than what your car requires if you're running a tune

Oh, and you should probably ignore those few tips before the discussion on pinging. That may have worked for us years ago when we were a bit... crazier... but I don't think I'd try some of that now.
Seriously, as stated, it could be just because of the gas...
Some stations are not up to par with their octane ratio, it happens.
You could also reflash your tune and see what happens as well.
Pinging sounds like a rattling noise...that is most likely to occur under load (like WOT, or uphill driving in a too-high gear).
There should be no question of what it is when you hear it. It sounds really bad. Imagine if there was 8 dwarves inside your motor beating the pistons with a hammer.
Now take the sound and imagine how it would sound if it were muffled because they are inside the engine.
