Default What's the wattage of shaker 500 8" Subs?

I haven't pulled the door panels off yet and was wondering if someone could tell me the wattage rating of the
8" door subs.

Also if they are 4ohm?, 2ohm?, Single? or Dual voice coil?

Thanks,

Steve

i would assume 4ohm, as its usually the industry standard, but the dealer should be able to find out for you. I would estimate them at 75watts rms, as 500w would be the total peak rating, so between the two of them and the four speakers the rms should tally to around 200-250. (75+75+ 4*~15). i would not put more than 75wrms on each of them, as you will not audibly be able to tell the difference between 50wrms and 75wrms anyway (double wattage would increase ideal output by 3db, but human ear hears 10db increase as doubling)

Thanks for the reply Sleeper. That helps a little and your numbers look good for a guesstimate. I came up with the about the same as you. I'd like to verify the numbers though.

I figured 4 ohm (standard in cars) as well, but I read a thread on this forum that mentioned they were dual voice coil? If so, that would make each coil 2 ohms wired to 4 ohms.

Any other takers? I'm seeing alot of 'systems' being installed, are yall leaving the stock subs in the doors?

How about the amps? Anybody have info on them?

Thanks,

Steve

it could also mean dual 8ohm wired in parallel to 4ohm. im 95% positive they are either 4 or 8ohm, as 2 is not a commonplace wiring in stock setups, and 1ohm is reserved for those damn bose systems. take one out of the door and it should say on the back how many ohms and you will see how many vc's. i would shoot for 50wrms @ 4ohms to power them, but i don't have the shaker system so i cant check the details.

Actually the 8" Subs are 1.2 Ohm x2 60W x 2 I can't find my camera or I would post a pic.

so im assuming they are wired in series to the tune of 120watts peak handling at 2.4ohms (each sub)? this would put the power rating i guessed within range (i said 50-75rms, and this would mean ~60rms is the actual rating). the impedence seems a lil low, but it is easier to get more power for cheaper with speakers that have less impedence, assuming the amp can handle that load.

well, now you know! lol

Thanks JJ_stang! for the info and to Philostang for the pic.

Wow 1.2ohms? I'd have never guessed that one. And they ARE DVC.

Great guesstimate on the numbers Sleeper05.

IF they are wired to 2.4 ohms, I would assume that the amps powering them would be stable to at least 2ohms.

Now, I just need to find an aftermarket sub to replace them...If I remember right, the mounting depth is 3.5"

Time to go 'surfing'

Thanks again to all who responded. Very much appreciated!

Later,

Steve

I have a question since we are on the topic of speakers. I have the Shaker 500 and the rear deck speaker look very small to me. Would replacing them with some Infinity Kappas be worth while? Also be sure and post up what replacement subs you find that fit in the stock location and make a bit better sound. The magnets on these speaker are dinky.

There was someone else on this forum, maybe another one I am not sure, that did replace those back speakers and he loved it! He said that it made the whole car sound better by just replacing those back ones. If I remember correctly they were only like 25Watts or something really low like that. Hope this helps!
