Popping/Backfire sound

Popping/Backfire sound
I was pulling out of work today and heard 2 loud "popping" or backfire sounds from what sounded like the passenger side exhaust when I was shifting from first to second gear. This has never happened before and did not happen againon the way home - I only live about 2 miles away though.
My car is stock. I use 87 octane gas. I have about 1400 miles and have had the car for 4 months. Live in S. Fla.
Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas what would cause this sound or a backfire in general? Should I check anything?
Any feedback or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not an expert and have never experienced this but whenever I hear a backfire I assume it is a car with a problem of some kind. Is this really normal? (especially since the car is stock)
Can anyone else confirm this? What is the cause?
I know it would concern me.

Yup...in cold weather especially, if I don't let the engine warm up enough, I get TONS of pops when shifting gears. It's a fun sound, but if you're not used to it I can see how it would be a little unnerving.
