Default Strange Noise

Hi,
I have a strange sound that I’m hoping someone might be able to help me identify. I have an ’07 GT Auto with 1500 miles on it and the only thing I’ve done so far is install the FRPP GTA axle-backs and paint the calipers. Coincidentally, I’ve only noticed the sound yesterday and today, I installed the GTA’s on Monday.

The last couple of mornings I’ve had this whirring sound that only starts when I put it in gear and accelerate. The only thing I can compare the sound to is the noise that the Pete Jackson “quiet” timing gears made on a ’74 Nova I had a long time ago. The sound is similar to that but not quite as loud.

It’s very noticeable at first but quiets down and then pretty much disappears when the car is fully warmed up. I can only hear it from about 0-20 and it seems to be coming from the middle or front of the car, definitely not from the rear. I don’t think it’s an exhaust leak or has anything to do with the GTA’s because it only makes the noise when it’s in gear and accelerating. It doesn’t make the noise when you rev it out of gear. I did have toloosen the bolts after the H pipe on the drivers side to adjust the alignment of theexhaust tip in the rearfasciawhen I installed the GTA's.I disassembled and painted the calipers two weeks ago and this only started a couple days ago so I don’t think it has anything to do with the brakes.

I’ve driven the car normally/gently since I got it, only making a couple WOT runs after I changed the oil to synthetic at 1K, just to see what it's capable of. Other than the noise the car seems fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jason

Mine makes a whinning sound. Although, I think mine is caused by either the pullies or the electric water pump.

Well, I had the back end up in the air this afternoon to double check for exhaust leaks and to check all the bolts - all good, no leaks.

I put it in gear to see if it would make the whirring noise, it did. This alsoeliminates thepossibility of it being in the front wheels. My father happened to stop by and hehas a lot of experience with all sorts of cars (I have a family of car guys)and I asked him to listen to it. He said it sounded like the transmission to him, whichis what I first thought it sounded like too. So, I guess I'll take itin.

Anyone else have a similar problem with the autotrans? I searched and only found a couple references to a whine from people who own '05's.

Took it into the dealer this morning for the noise and just thought I would post the result.

The shop foreman took it for a ride with me and he said that it sounded like a rubber seal to him so they put it up to check it out. It turns out that the drive shaft boots and seals needed to be lubricated. They explained that the Ford procedure is to lube it, and if the noise returns, replace. They say that it solves the problem most of the time. So far the noise is gone and the car actually seemed quieter than it was when I bought it on the drive home.

BTW – I bought the car from Elmhurst Ford in IL and so far I have nothing but good things to say about them. The purchase experience was smooth (no BS) and today was just as good. I’ve had problems with cars before but never had anyone offer to take it for a ride to listen for a problem.
