Default Trunk latch is making a bad sound

Hey Guys,

My trunk release is acting up. When I click the release button on my fob, it unlatches but is making a clanking against metal sound. Its as if, there are pieces of metal on each side of a latch and and it is quickly vibrating back and forth between the pieces.

I know that really doesn't paint an accurate picture, but I hope you get the idea.

If this makes zero sense, I could try to capture and post a video.

Anyway, does anyone have experience with this? I can move the latch part with my finger pretty easily, so I don't think the latch itself is the issue, but then again, I haven't opened it up.

Thank you.

Mine does that occasionally also, I believe it is an alignment issue with the latch. shouldn't be hard to correct.

My wife's old Focus did that. It is an alignment issue between the latch and catch. Fairly easy fix, just requires adjustment

And is this adjustment as easy as everyone is making it out to be? Take off the cover, loosen a screen, adjust, tighten screw, replace cover?

That's basically it. Might have to do it a couple of times to get it lined up properly.

I should point out that it makes the noise even when it is not latched. If the trunk lid is up I can push the button and replicate the sound all I want. Does that still sound like an alinement issue?

That is what mine sounds like.
The large electric solenoid that
opens the trunk makes a lot of racket.

I would not want it any other way as
I have a auditory conformation that
the key fob has unlatched the trunk.

Remove the solenoid from the assembly
and activate it to replicate the sound.
It will not be as loud since it is not attached
to the trunk lid. Bolt the solenoid to a metal
garbage can lid and activate it to see if the
noise is the same as when attached to the
trunk lid. Or just live with it?

On the other hand if it is bugging the
carp out of you, you can do the following...
The noise is the plunger bottoming out
in the solenoid. Remove the plunger and
insert a small rubber bumper into the
plunger hole and reinstall the plunger.
