I'm around the beaches in Norfolk and Virginia Beach everyday and I never get sand around my gas cap.

In Jersey and I get it too. It's from rain washing dirt off the car and it settles in that fill area. Wind blown particles can help that out too...It should be just fine if you wipe it clean from time to time.

Well, I'll have to check tonight to see if there's any inside my fuel door. I'm in Kentucky and there "ain't no" sand in "these here parts, I reckon, y'all"! (PA boy trying to talk southern)...

The sand is getting there from the water spray from the rear tires coming up through the gas overflow drain. As the water drains back out it leaves the road dirt/sand behind.

Also... if you drip any gas after filling the gas dries... and then it "appears" to be sand. I don't know the exact mathematics or chemistry... but we learned this in Automechanics when taking a part an engine. There was traces of "sand" but it is actually just dried up gas.

Or maybe our shop teacher was bull****ting us, but that's what i've come to believe.

Thanks to Ford the fuel tank remains accessible to all the crapheads out there 24/7. I don't see why it was so hard to do what most other manufacturers do and comp up with a locking fuel door like any cheap *** honda has. Anyway, I got the locking gas cap next day after purchasin the car itself. You should do too.
