Default Gears

I am running through many sites and soaking in as much of the modification chatter as I can, but man, there is way too much to absorb for a newbie like myself. Upside - money to do a lot of mods. Downside - a newbie.

Just a question: if you were to have an auto 05 mustang GT, the chatter at another site was 3.73s. What exactly do the gears do for you in an auto as far as feel in the driver's seat and what would the cost be to actually add the appropriate gears?

I have so much going through my head at this point:
Whipple SC
K&N FIPK
Magnaflow 2.5" cat-back
3.73 gears
Steeda underdrive pulleys
Roush hood scoop (non-functional)
Roush rear wing

What are these h and x-pipes, etc.?

Street legal is a necessity.

Well, gears will give more torque, nicer launch feel. 3.73 seems like the right gear for an Auto, although others are going to 4.10's. Cost, should run around $300 for parts & labor. I will be installing 4.10's in mine soon. As far as H / X pipe, just look under your car now! You have an H pipe! Ford did a nice job on the exhaust! As for anything else, it's your's. Have fun...

Dave:

Thanks. What are your thoughts on the exhaust (i.e., Magnaflows)?

Greg

i talked to the local steeda dealer in Houston and he told me that they have done the bassani, magnaflow, steeda (which he told me is just the magnaflow with a steeda logo), and Borla. The borla is gonna be the most expensive of these and usually puts out the best sound. The magnaflow sounds stock at idle and pops a lot when decelerating. From what he told me, the bassani is the best sounding one from idle-acceleration-deceleration...it is priced right around the average of all these systems...personally, i heard the soundbyte of the JBA exhaust and it sounded bada**. Another tip i got from the guy at steeda is that they quit carrying JBA b/c they are so low priced but they get alot of returns on them due to malfunction. I will most likely go with the Bassani myself. They quoted me $479 + $75 install but check the internet first

Automatics need 3.90s or 4.10s. 3.73s are good for manual cars not autos.

Huh...Not questioning your info, just curious why there would be a dif. between Auto/Man transmission. Isn't torque, torque?

Anyone else want to chime in on this. I've never heard of this before. I was wanting to put 3.73s in my automatic, because I will be doing a fair share of highway driving, and seemd like a good trade-off from the 4.10s. [sm=smiley13.gif]

I have an Auto with 4.10's. I average 22 MPG highway. The reason Auto's need more gear is that the Auto has more power loss through the drive train and takes a little more leverage to get things going. First gear in a stick is already lower than an Auto so an Auto will benefit more from a little more gear. I love the way my car pulls and the little MPG I give up is worth it.

Well, gears will give more torque, ...
Gears won't "give" you more torque. They simply make what you already have more accessible.
