my guess is that the RX-8 would take a V6. those things r nothing to joke about. ive never raced one but ive seen them n if they run high 13s their is no chance a v6 stang would ever be able to run. V6 stangs do not run high 13s in the 1/4. race for fun dont bet $$$ on it. u def have a better chance @ him if u go fr. a dig Good luck man

Off the line this car will take a v6, from a roll, it's a drivers race. I recently raced one down an industrial side street from a rolling start. Never caught me and I pulled on him in third. Never found out if it was an auto or manual though. If they beefed up the torque on those motors they would be hella faster.

A little more info......

RX8s, by design (a little oil is injecte to the chambers to keep the seals lubed) will use a little oil. In my experience, it was about a quart low when I was ready for an oil change about every 5K miles. Still, it's a good idea to check it every 2nd or 3rd fill-up (as it is with any car).

The beauty of the the RX8's rotary is that it does have a 9K redline. Aside from it sounding like an Indy car, you don't have to shift as much to keep it in it's power band above 3.5K RPMs. The downside is there isn't much "oomph" below the 3.5K RPM mark.

The first ones to hit these shores (mine included) had some issues with cat converters and their longevity at the higher quoted HP figure (or 247HP). While it's still not clear whether or not the higher HP tune of the cars would have affected the longevity of the CATs, Mazda decided not to take a chance and reprogrammed the PCM to put out the lower HP (238 HP) figure. It's extremely difficult to dyno the RENESIS (what the RX8's rotary is named) rotary. No one, to my knowledge, has yet been able to defeat the ECU to get a reliable dyno figure, though lots have tried and said they've done so, but you can't get a reliable reading if you can't totally defeat the on-board computer. What that means is the only real reliable HP estimate comes from Mazda themselves, which have had a RENESIS put out as much as 300HP. Matter of fact, there's a strong rumor that Mazda will bring out a 300HP version of the RENESIS for the '06 RX model year. It may be a MazdaSpeed version of the RX8 or it's rumored there may be a rebirth of the RX7 that will use it. In a car that is as light as an RX, 300HP will make it very fast.

Over the last 1.5 years, Mazda has been able to gather more info regarding CAT converter durability. As such, they've had many reflashes of the ECU of the RX8....at last count, there have been at least 4 or 5 of these reflashes that any dealer can do to any RX8. Some of the reflashes have addressed an ongoing "flooding" problem with the RX8 (it can be flooded if you start, shut down and try to restart it if it's not up to operating temps). Some (including me) believe that Mazda has also quietly upped the HP ratings a bit via these reflashes, too (yet Mazda is still sticking to their 238 HP rating).

Fuel economy isn't at the top of the list for any sports car worth it's salt. The RX8 is no exception even though the rotary is only 1.3L. That said, an RX8 won't hit optimal fuel efficiency until it's thoroughly broken in. That doesn't happen until you hit the 5K-8K mile marker. That fact, along with the reflash of the engine computer, will produce pretty close what the EPA estimates say MPG should be....that is 18MPG in the city and 24 MPG on all highway.

My MPG got much better after 8K miles and got better again after I had the reflashes done. Before that, it was pretty dismal, however.

It's not like the Mustang GT is going to be an MPG champ, either.

I wouldn't want to race an RX8 if I had a V6 anything. Even pitting the excellent V6 in the 350Z against the RX8 will be a driver's race. They'll be "neck and neck". Putting up an RX8 GT against a Mustang GT will be no contest in favor of the Mustang GT. A Mustang V6 against the RX8? No contest, the RX8 wins.

The automatic RX8 has even less HP (a little less than 200HP and the redline is "only" 8K RPMs) plus the power sapping of the auto tranny. Yet, it's a version of a "manumatic". They aren't particularly fast. But, I don't know many that have an automatic.

Just be careful in the race you choose when you go up against them.
