Default Help! Ignition comes out along with key...

Tonight, as I was pulling the key out of the ignition, much to my surprise, the ignition came out as well!

I called my brother, who is a mechanic, and he told me to Google the problem, as it could be possible that there is a procedure that allows you to remove it that I may have inadvertantly followed. I can't find any info on the web, however.

Does anyone know, is there something I can do to 'lock' it back in, or do I need to be calling the dealer in the morning to get it fixed?

I have a 2008 base model.

Thanks for any advice.

That's a no. Unless you've got the coverings off with tools.

And as to your question, here ya go. Full removal and install instructions, but it's likely damaged since it came out like that. Have that brother look at it, rather than likely have the dealer charge you. $30 part, $0 if there's nothing actually wrong with it, or it's easily fixable.

Came across a thread a bit back that caught a possible error for the service manual. So if you have trouble, put the key in the "accessory" position rather than "ignition" (accessory is for just turning on the radio and such, before the dash lights come on) when you're trying to get this back in by the service manual's directions. See this post/thread for details.

This is all assuming of course that it was just the lock cylinder that came out on you.

I heard that several times at the dealership this morning! Have to have the whole ignition switch changed too, but all is lunder my extended warranty.

And my brother keeps telling me to just leave the lock on my seat to let the thieves know it's all ready to hotwire, lol!
