The insurance is also going to be a lot more... tack that onto the $500+ more a year in gas... Between gas and insurance, that's going to be a lot of $$$$ for a 20 year old.

did some math and i think you are making a big mistake. you cant just not get a car because of gas prices. the difference between 3 dollar gass and 350 gas is only 500 bucks a year. when you buy your car just finance and extra bucks and there you go. all the gas you will ever need and it would be a small price monthly

but if i still didnt persuade you then i would suggest a cobolt ss... keep it american

V6 Mustang > Rice in my opinion. It is really tough thinking of a fun 4 cylinder...you've stumped me there.

How bout an Srt4 Neon? You can find low milage ones for about 14k. But I agree with Surfbum, you shouldn't base your decision on gas prices alone. Even $2,000 more on gas in a year is not much in that length of time. Anyway, Srt4s are pretty quick, I was considering one before I bought the Stang. I decided to go with the Stang because It felt quite a bit faster and because I fell for its muscle car good looks lol.

There are very few quality cars that can be had for under $20K new these days....maybe get a used GT and that fits your payments so you can still afford the rest of the ownership expense

Oh come on now... 4 bangers are fun. I've drove a 2007 Civic Si Sedan and it's an awesome little car!

I agree, get a used GT. If you cant do that. Find a used Dodge Neon SRT-4 like phatty said. They are easy to mod, quick little cars. I also almost got one, i was about to drive from TX to Louisiana to test drive and maybe buy, but then i called the ford dealership and they had 1 05 gt with 6k miles so i picked it up that night (compulsive buying but it was perfect). If you do decide to look at SRT4s look for the ACR edition, it has bettersuspension and wider tires, should be able to pick one up for around 16-19, maybe cheaper by now.

At 20 years old gas will be the least of your problems with a GT. Insurance will be outrageous even on a used one. I owned a v6 until i got my GT. I never regretted it and it was a great car. I always got compliments on it. I'd own a v6 Mustang before a ricer.
