People safely get away with
Get away with it, yes, though I could question just how 'safely'.

Half an inch out of spec isn't a guaranteed, right-now,pass-fail kind of thing. But you are giving away some unknown amount out of the margin of safety against things such as underinflation, overloading, heat, tire structural flexing, where in the sidewall the heat and flexing concentrates, extended high speed driving, hard cornering, curb strikes, potholes, etc. And those are just the things I could think of as fast as I could type them.

Arguments like
unless I knew that there are people out there who are running it without any problems
have about the same merit as the teen-aged whining that goes something like "everybody else is doing that". Doesn't make it technically correct.

It's been a while since I actually had a conversation about this wheel/tire width relationship issue with an honest-to-goodness tire company technical representative.

Norm
i am about to buy a set of 315 35 20 bfg rivals for my 20*10 rims and i know the department of motor safety rating for them is at least 10.5 so i seen a lot of people say it's ok and show pics of it and daily drive it and a lot of people say no it's not safe to go .5 under spec.. can you please link me 1 safety incident that happened from people going .5 under spec from anywhere because i did a lot of research and couldn't find anything.. and i will return my purchase and buy a smaller tire.. i am not saying what your saying is wrong or whatnot i just want see if you know anything that actually took place and i know it could affect my safety in future but did anything happen in the past regarding .5 off spec

No way in hell those are both 315.... I looked up both the sizes on Tire Rack, their section width and tread width are within tenths of an inch of each other. That picture makes it look like 2-3 inches...I'm going to say 315 vs 345 on the width of what the pictures show.

Running 315/35/20 lowered 1.5 in rear. No problems.

Except from that angle it looks like they stick out past the fender.
Which would have been ok when I was a kid, but now that I'm older that look would not work for me.

I've run GS-D3's myself (275, not 315), and they are easily one of the widest tires out there for any given tire size. Compared to a set of Nitto NT555's I'd also run (which is a little narrow for any given tire size), there was definitely a substantial difference in the actual widths of the tire tires, even though they were technically the same size.

I have no problem believing both those tires are listed as 315 tires.
