OEM VS. AFTERMARKET HIDs

OEM VS. AFTERMARKET HIDs
I'm having a dilemma concerning HIDs. I've been checking out the threads, checking out the Ford OEM HIDs, the Saleen HIDs, and the ones on Stangmods.com. Now, the obvious glaring difference is the difference in price. $999/899 compared to $280 on Stangmods. Now what I want to know is why the huge jump in price for the OEM ones? I've read on various threads concerning the OEM HIDs stating that they are not even worth it, let alone for those prices. That the light output is puny. But the thing that seperates OEM from aftermarket is the deflector thing? I don't want to be able to blind other drivers, but would want to light up the streets as well. Any of you guys care to input?

I don't know about aftermarket but my factory HID on my GT put out a good bright white light. Not the blueish ricer light I've seen on many aftermarket sets.
Do I think it's worth $900+, no
but since my car came with them I'm not complaining

i have the stangmods kit and love them! They dont blind people and have the hi/low beam function. Depends on the kelvin you get to what the tint of the light is. I'd get 4300k or 6000k. anything higher starts to get really blue. i had 8000k but swapped them for 6000k. The lower the Kelvin the more useable light they produce. I've seen the oem ones and i would never pay the extra for them. They are nice, but not worth anywhere near the price. I've had my stangmods hids for about 9mo.

The stangmods ones, as with most aftermarket HID's, only replace the bulb and add the required ballast. The Ford OEM and Saleen HID's replace the entire light assembly - hence the added cost. Also, you may want to check out retro-solutions, they seem to have a high quality product that is cheaper than stangmods. Also, if you get the aftermarket and have an 07 or later, make sure you get a bulb with the tip painted or you will get a lot of glare and oncoming traffic will hate you - retro-solutions supplies these.

ah ok. so what is the benefits of changing the whole assembly instead of just the bulb? is that why the OEMs have that deflector in the housing and the aftermarket bulbs have to be painted to reduce glare? as for the kelvin yea im looking at around 4300~6000k, nothing higher than that.

I believe the housing is the same as the OEM non-HID housing. However, it appears they add a device in front of the bulb to adjust the beam...not sure though. As far as the painted tip, retro-solution offers a 55 watt system that is a little brighter than the 35 watt one. In this case, some in 07+ have decided to go with the painted tip.
