Default New found appreciation for the S197

If I see anyone state how difficult it is to mod or repair the S197 I will scream. I added a 95 Z28 LT1 to my garage. If you've never tried to work on one, even simply changing plugs on the passenger side, find one and try. I gave up trying to put long tube headers in. It just isn't worth it.

I now appreciate more the blunt nose of the stangs. The slope of the F bodies has a trade off in that the engine is so far back that even simple tasks require removal of many items or lifting the engine.

Now I will tell you that they handle nice but this is the stang forum. OK, I now own both and am a confused fellow

I am, now appreciating the engine bay a lot more of the S197's

lol,I owned a 95 Z28 when i bought the mustang. Iknow exactly what you mean. After working on that thing, the mustang is a cake walk. I fabbed my own dual exhaust for the Z28, changed to longtube headers, changed cams, plugs and plug wires. I did alot of work on that car and it was pretty tough to do just the simple things, plug wires and plugs took almost a full day, lol.

Oh man I fell that pain, I had to change a set of plugs on a 85? z28. In addition to being a complete PITA to get to, we had the car on one of those old center mount hydrolic lifts so there was absolutely no room to work. I think the job ended up taking over 8 hours if I remember right.

I agree, the mustang is pretty easy to mod and Ford was pretty generous with engine bay room. To give you an idea, Jon Kaase of Kaase engineering put a Boss 429 engine in a S197 and there's still plenty of room between shock towers. I think he even said there's more room than the original boss 429 cars had.

got to love being able to hig your motor while it is in the bay. i work at a land rover dealer and you want to talk about PITA to work on. try one of these trucks. understand the guys with the z's saying the plug and wire change was 8 hrs. on these you have to remove the secondary air intake and the intake gasket to change the wires. the techs get paid 4 hrs to do it(at $98/hr) and the plugs are $350. ouch!!!!
they love it when i pull my car in and see all the room they have to work with and how everything is so easy to get to. thanks for doing something right FORD.

For that matter there is a world of difference from the previous mustang to this one to work on. I am currently installing my procharger and getting to the fuel pump is so easy it's like not even a real job the seats and trim come apart so easy. I think the worse thing I have done to this car has been the upper control arm.
