2007 mustang help, what is this?

hello so my 07 overheated and now I don't have any coolant... well looking at the engine I found this hole touching it there was coolant inside ... MY dad thinks its a overheat valve that popped...

should I just refill the coolant and watch it to see it if over heats ... had alot of steam coming from the middle of the engine
any help would be great

2007 --- is it a V8 or V6? With the close up picture I can't figure out for sure where you took the picture as far as location on the engine. It almost looks like it is up front at the thermostat housing, but I'm not sure.

I cant tell for sure either but it looks like it's near the thermostat housing. I've never heard of anything like an overheat valve that pops open. Not to be rude, but it isnt a turkey with a popup timer. That does look like where a lot of water may have been coming out and you should not be able to put your finger in any part on the block and fingerbang a bunch of coolant. It does look like a plug for something did fall out though.
Absolutely DO NOT fill it full of coolant and run it.
You could seize the block and if its lower in the car you probably have air in the system. Let us know if it's a V8 or V6 and back the picture out a little bit so we can tell where in the engine this is at better. Once we have a better idea of what and where this is we can likely help better.

Was it very cold last night where the car was ? Does look like freeze plug. If so will have to be replaced. Also hopefully with luck there is not block crack. When the coolant freezes it pushes out the plug.
